A juvenile SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER was seen at the Cattleland Feedlots Slough north
of Strathmore on Tuesday, August 9. The bird was seen at 3:00 pm along the west
shoreline, just south of the midway point between the north and south end. The bird
was seen by Al Borgardt and Ross Lien, who watched it for 10-15 minutes. The slough
is in the N/E corner of the Hwys 564 & 817 junction. Amongst extremely good variety
and numbers of other shorebirds there, Al & Ross also saw 2 winter plumaged DUNLIN.

North of Strathmore on Sunday, August 7, an adult and an immature LITTLE GULL were
reported by Robin Anderson. Robin reported the birds were in the N/E corner of a
slough that is in the N/E corner of the first 4-way road junction north of
Strathmore. The junction is approximately 5.2 kms north of Hwy 1 on Hwy 817. Robin
watched the birds from a distance of approximately 200 yards for 15 minutes. Visits
by other birders to the site through the week failed to find the birds.

There were many reports of migrating songbirds in the area through the week. Early
migrants were a PALM WARBLER seen by Bernard & Therese Goulet on Monday, August 8 in
Fish Creek PP Bankside area and an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER observed by Mike Mulligan
and CFNS on Tuesday, August 9 in the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. Al Borgardt and CFNS
on Saturday, August 6 observed in Inglewood Bird Sanctuary an OVENBIRD, 4 NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSH and 2 TENNESSEE WARBLERS. Two WESTERN TANAGERS were seen in east Fish
Creek PP on August 9 and banders at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary banded a WESTERN
TANAGER this week.

HOUSE FINCHES continue to expand their range within Calgary. An observer in
Christie Estates reported both HOUSE and PURPLE FINCHES in her neighbourhood within
the past 2-3 weeks.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, August 15.
