This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for November 24, 2005,

In San Miguel County:
BW on November 22 at the Clabber Hill Ranch near Conchas Lake found a
LECONTE'S SPARROW east of the road below the pond south of the drainage about 300
yards east of the road in bunch grass. Call 868-3351 for permission to bird
on the ranch. He also saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE there. He had a PACIFIC LOON,
six COMMON LOONS, and a first winter HERRING GULL on Conchas Lake and a CARDINAL
at the nearby golf course sewage ponds. JO on the ranch on November 20 had
up to seven MARSH WRENS with up to seven COMMON LOONS.
In Colfax County:
On Stubblefield Lake DC had on November 18 a female LONG-TAILED DUCK. A
COMMON LOON were present on November 20, and the duck was still present on
November 23.
. On November 18 DC had eight CALIFORNIA GULLS and two BALD EAGLES on Eagle
Nest Lake.
DC at the Sugarite State Park near Raton on November 12 at the visitor
center feeder found a tan phase WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and three SLATE-COLORED
JUNCOS.
Lake 14 on the nearby Maxwell Refuge is closed for the winter.
In Quay County:
JO had up to ten COMMON LOONS on Ute Lake on November 20.
In Bernalillo County:
A few BLACK ROSY-FINCHES have already arrived at the Crest House feeders
on Sandia Crest east of Albuquerque on November 12. DO saw them on November
14. DC found flocks of four to 25 coming in November 22 with all three species
and a HEPBURN'S present.
At the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque CP on November 12 saw a
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at the Herb Garden feeder. A WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was
seen with 318 CACKLING GEESE on the pond by the parking lot by JP and BP on
November 12. RY on November 14 saw the EURASIAN WIGEON on November 14. DP had two
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE November 19.
BV had a female EASTERN BLUEBIRD on November 12 on Forest Road 252 3/4
mile below the Cedro Peak Trailhead in the Manzanita Mts. south of Tijeras.
RY reports that a feeder named after Ryan has been placed at the visitor
center windows at the nature center. He says on November 12 a CURVE-BILLED
THRASHER was in the chollas at the entrance gate.
In Torrance County:
JJ found two WINTER WRENS in Trigo Canyon of the Manzano Mts. Wilderness
area on November 13.
In Roosevelt County:
JO on November 20 had 10,000 SANDHILL CRANES on the Grulla Refuge near
Portales, but there was little surface water left.
DC on November 15 at the migrant trap 11 miles west of Melrose had a
YELLOW-SHAFTED FLICKER, three EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, and the PYRRHULOXIA.
In Curry County:
JO had two GREATER and two LESSER YELLOWLEGS still in Texico on November
20.
In Socorro County:
On highway 380 east of San Antonio between mile markers 16 and 17 there
is a dirt road going north by grassy fields. After a jog in the road there is
a tank with a berm. Half a mile beyond JP, JO, BP, and LL found five
SPRAGUE'S PIPITS with hundreds of CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS, tens of MCCOWN'S
LONGSPURS, and two CACTUS WRENS. WW found the longspurs and one pipit on November
21.
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio BH saw the WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW at the visitor center on November 12. CL on November 13 saw two EASTERN
PHOEBES, and a MERLIN. CR saw a White-throated Sparrow and SNC banded a
BLACK-TAILED GNATCATCHER on November 19.
At Turtle Bay Park on the NMTU campus in Socorro CR on November 19 had a
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and a HUTTON'S VIREO.
In Chaves County:
SW on November 20 at Bitter Lake Refuge near Roswell had an AMERICAN
BITTERN, three WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, and found a dead FLAMMULATED OWL.
In Sierra County:
JO on November 17 saw two WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER
at North Monticello Point on Elephant Butte Lake. On November 23 the plover
was still there. At South Highlands Point he found four COMMON LOONS. On
November 23 he found at second winter THAYER'S GULL first at the Rock Canyon
Marina area and then later at Lyons's Cove.
CL on November 20 at Percha Dam State Park had a late BULLOCK'S ORIOLE,
two PLUMBEOUS VIREOS, two ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, three WHITE-THROATED
SPARROWS, an EMPIDONAX FLYCATCHER (possibly a DUSKY), with two CATTLE EGRETs and nine
EASTERN BLUEBIRDS south of the park.
On November 23 in addition to these species he had a HUTTON'S VIREO, a
CASSIN'S VIREO, and a MYRTLE WARBLER.
MBr on November 17 had a calling PYGMY OWL at the parking lot on Emory
Pass.
In Grant County:
RS had a FOX SPARROW on November 11 at the Gila Bird Area.
In Hidalgo County:
In Clanton Canyon on November 9 MBr had a YELLOW-EYED JUNCO at the
campground. For the night shift he had two WHISKERED SCREECH-OWLS there and two
more down canyon at the riparian area a mile after the forest service
boundary.
In Luna County:
LM on November 10 had a RUDDY GROUND-DOVE at the Mountain View Cemetery
in Deming. CL saw a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW there on November 23.
LM advises that the waste water treatment ponds there will be closed for up
to a year with construction.
In Doņa Ana County:
MBr on November 22 had a FOX SPARROW in the leaf litter in the forested
arroyo at La Cueva in the Organ Mountains.
JO on November 17 found a male and two female LAPLAND LONGSPURS at the
northern Jornada del Muerto north of Las Cruces.
CL on November 19 had an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBER at McDowell and Conway in
Mesilla Park, an immature female YELLOWTHROAT at the Mesilla Valley Bosque
Park (Old Refuge), and a BURROWING OWL on the NMSU campus in Las Cruces near the
livestock pens. He had six BRONZED COWBIRDS at the pens on November 23.
MBr on November 15 had three HOODED MERGANSERS at the Old Refuge area
south of Mesilla.
In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the 'no access'
signs are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding. On November 16
he had five BONAPARTE'S GULLS and a SANDHILL CRANES there. Four HARRIS'S
HAWKS, three on one pole, were along US 70 at mile marker 208.9 just south of
Alamogordo.

Field Trips:
Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check, as there may be a last minute change in
plans. There will no trip on Thanksgiving. On December 1 the trip is to the
Domingo Baca Trail on the west side of the Sandias and on December 8 they go to
the Rio Grande Nature Center.
Sundays in November the back roads of the Las Vegas Refuge will be open from
9 to 4 for birding. There will be programs on Sunday at 1. On November 27
the program is the Basics of Birds by Eileen Everett.
Southwestern Audubon will have its annual Winter Raptor Count on Saturday,
December 3. Contact is 388-3441.
