This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, November 24. Please
report sightings to Jon Fisher at 818-544-5009 (or e-mail to
JonF60@hotmail.com).
Four SNOW GEESE were seen near the Pacific Coast Highway bridge at Malibu
Lagoon on November 21.
A male WHITE-WINGED SCOTER and a female BLACK SCOTER have been seen at
Dockweiler State Beach in El Segundo through November 21. Parking can be
found along the Pacific Coast Highway at the outlook between Imperial and
Grand.
The THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD at Banning Park in Wilmington was reported again
on November 19. The YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was also reported through the
19th. Banning Park is on the Pacific Coast Highway, just east of the 110
Freeway. The east side of the park has been the most productive.
At Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale, a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was seen November
19 through 21. This is likely the same bird that spent last winter at this
location. Look for near the lake shore adjacent to Parking Lot #5, though
it may been seen anywhere in the general area. Other birds here included a
ROSS' GOOSE, GRAY FLYCATCHER and VESPER SPARROW.
The GRAY FLYCATCHER at Veteran's Park in Sylmar was still present on
November 23. The bird continues west of the west end of the parking lot. A
late SWAINSON'S THRUSH was also seen here on November 23. Veteran's Park is
at the north end of Sayre Street in Sylmar.
A WINTER WREN was found at DeForest Park in Long Beach on November 19. Park
at the south end of DeForest where it meets Chestnut and walk west along the
nature trail to the tule reeds where the bird was seen.
A PALM WARBLER was at Madrona Marsh in Torrance on November 19. This bird
was at the northeast corner of the willow trees.
The PAINTED RESDTART at Bonelli Park in San Dimas continued through November
20. The bird is near Restroom #8, close to the Via Verde entrance to the
park. From the entrance kiosk, take the 3rd left into the parking area.
The bird has been most often seen in an oak tree in the median between the
road and parking lot.
Also at Bonelli Park on November 20 was a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER. This
bird was found near the north shore of the lake north of the small pier.
The PAINTED REDSTART at Elysian Park was reported through November 18. This
bird is in the Solano Canyon area of Elysian Park near Park and Academy. It
has been most often seen in the maple trees north of the upper playground
area.
A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was found in Sylmar on November 23. This bird was at
the Sylmar Baseball League fields along Pacoima Wash. From the 118 Fwy go
north on Hubbard, right on Eldridge and then left on Harding. From here,
bear left to the ballfield complex.
[A correction on the location of the ORCHARD ORIOLE listed on last week's
report. This bird was at Ballona Lagoon north of the harbor entrance on
November 14, not at Del rey Lagoon.]
This report is sponsored by the Los Angeles Audubon Society.
