Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was
recorded on Thursday, Nov 24, at 10 a.m. To report a bird sighting,
leave a message after the recording, or to bypass the recorded message,
press the pound key on your touch tone phone. To speak to a naturalist,
please phone 221-4500 during office hours.
A COMMON EIDER was apparently seen and photographed at Pine Coulee
Reservoir, west of Stavely, on Sunday, Nov 20. The bird was found by
Doug and Theresa Dolman of Lethbridge. They saw the bird from Twp Rd
150 at the north end of the Reservoir at 4 pm. They thought the bird to
be a female. Other observers attempted to locate the bird there on the
morning of Monday, Nov 21, but were unsuccessful. This would be
probably only Alberta's 3rd record for the species.
The ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD that has been in High River for approx a month
now was still being seen up until Friday, Nov 18, mostly coming to a
hummingbird feeder in the back yard at 551 - 7 St SW. There are only
slightly more than a handful of records for this species in Alberta.
The homeowner thinks the bird may have left.
At least 5 LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen at Pine Coulee Reservoir on the
morning of Monday, Nov 21. Yousif Attia and Jody Allair observed the
birds and also saw there 1 HORNED GREBE, 4 CANVASBACKS, 1 NORTHERN
SHOVELER, 5 REDHEADS and 30 LESSER SCAUP.
Andrew Slater observed a 1st year gull he thinks was probably a THAYER'S
GULL at Elliston Park at 60 St SE on 17 Ave in Calgary on the morning of
Wednesday, Nov 23. Ray Wershler reported an adult ROSS'S GOOSE at IBS on
Tuesday, Nov 22. Royce & Deb Howland reported a NORTHERN HAWK OWL was
on Hwy 68 east of the south loop of the Jumping Pound Forest Demo Rd on
Monday, Nov 21.
An adult male CAPE MAY WARBLER is still appearing in Andrew Slater's
back yard in the Oakridge subdivision of Calgary. The bird has appeared
there on Nov 21, 22 & 23 this week, but only stays a couple of minutes.
For info, call Andrew at 251-6299.
The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, November 28.
