This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for Friday, August 12, 2005 covering
the period August 5-11, 2005.



On August 7th, a GREAT EGRET was seen on Shelburne Bay, and on
the 9th seven GREAT EGRETS were observed at Munson Flat on Routes 2 and 7
in Colchester.



Many OSPREY were present at Arrowhead Mountain Lake in Georgia
on August 8th. A mature BALD EAGLE was seen at Somerset Reservoir on
August 6th, and two immature eagles were spotted in a pasture on the
northern tip of Shelburne Pond on the 11th. A SHARP-SHINNED HAWK was
spotted at Green River Reservoir on the 4th of August. A COOPER'S HAWK
was sighted on Grand Isle on the 7th of August, and another COOPER'S HAWK
was observed chasing a BLUEJAY into the woods in Montpelier on the 8th.
Two MERLINS were seen this week: one in Putney on the 8th and one flying
over Monkton Pond chasing swallows on August 11th. A PEREGRINE FALCON
passed over the steeple of Grace Church in Rutland on August 5th.



Several KILLDEER and SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 1 SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPER and 17
LEAST SANDPIPERS were spotted along the Brilyea Access Road at Dead Creek
on the 8th of August. The effect of the recent drawdown on exposing
mudflats will be determined by the amount of rain we receive in the coming
weeks. On the 6th and 7th of August 15 LEAST SANDPIPERS were seen at
Brattleboro Retreat Meadows. Seven LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 1 SOLITARY
SANDPIPER and 14 LEAST SANDPIPERS including two juveniles were observed at
Herrick's Cove. There were numerous CASPIAN TERN sightings this week and
last, including 1 flying over Lake Iroquois east of Hinesburg on August
2nd, 1 off the Colchester Causeway, several at the mouth of the Lamoille
River on the 7th, and 1 at Arrowhead Mountain Lake in Georgia on the 8th.



Two YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS were observed on Grand Isle on the 8th of August.



Several PURPLE MARTIN families were spotted on Shelburne Bay on
August 7th, and PURPLE MARTINS were present all week on Grand Isle,
peaking with 24 individuals spotted on the 10th of August.



A CAROLINA WREN was observed in Castleton on the 6th of August,
on the 11th in Rutland Town and two were seen repeatedly in East Dorset
this week.
