The next VNHS Birders' Night will take place on Thursday, December 1st
at 7:30 PM at St. Mary Anglican Church, 2490 West 37th Avenue at Larch
Street in Vancouver. Enter the building from the north side at the notice
board with the street number on it. This month's meeting will focus on
preparations for the Vancouver Christmas Bird Count, including a bird ID
workshop. Area leaders are asked to attend if possible, and prospective
first-time participants are welcome. The count itself will be on Sunday,
December 18th.
Sightings for Monday, November 28
A search for SNOWY OWLS turned up a total of 6 birds-- 2 near the foot
of 72nd and 2 near the foot of 64th Street in Delta, one at Brunswick
Point in Delta, and one more on the west side of Sea Island in Richmond.
Also of interest was an AMERICAN BITTERN at Brunswick Point.
Near the base of the Roberts Bank jetty in Delta, an ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER was seen.
Sightings for Sunday, November 27
A BOHEMIAN WAXWING was present for much of the day near the SW
corner of the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver.
One SNOWY OWL was seen near the foot of 72nd Street on Boundary
Bay in Delta, another was partway out the Tsawwassen ferry jetty, and
a third was seen perched on a house in the 5700 block of 132A Street
in the Panorama Ridge section of Surrey.
Other birds seen near the foot of 72nd Street included a GLAUCOUS GULL, 8
SHORT-EARED OWLS, 12 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 4 WESTERN
MEADOWLARKS, an AMERICAN KESTREL, and 2 BARN OWLS. 3
MARBLED GODWITS were seen near the foot of 104th Street, and a
pair of GREAT HORNED OWLS were hooting at Delta's Beach Grove
Park.
At the Tsawwassen Jetty in Delta, a HORNED LARK, a SNOW BUNTING,
a WILLET, and 4 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS were seen.
In West Vancouver, several SURFBIRDS were seen on the Grebe Islet off
Lighthouse Park, and an ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS in the Caulfield area.
Sightings for Saturday, November 26
An AMERICAN AVOCET was present at the mouth of the Serpentine River on
Mud Bay in Surrey, and a late WILSON'S WARBLER was seen in the hedgerow
along 72nd Street in Delta.
Sightings for Friday, November 25
Two SNOWY OWLS were seen on the Iona Island south jetty in Richmond, and
3 WESTERN MEADOWLARKS were seen on Iona Island itself.
A HUTTON'S VIREO was seen near Highway 17 in Delta, east of Ladner.
Sightings for Thursday, November 24
At Lighthouse Marine Park in Point Roberts, Washington, birds seen offshore
included 2 MARBLED MURRELETS, 5 PIGEON GUILLEMOTS, and 25
COMMON MURRES.
A CACKLING GOOSE was seen on Sea Island, Richmond, west of the
Coast Guard station, and a SNOWY OWL was seen on the extreme SW
corner of Sea Island.
Sightings for Wednesday, November 23
Two BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS were seen along the south side of the
Tsawwassen ferry jetty in Delta, as well as the WILLET near the jetty base.
Sightings for Tuesday, November 22
A female ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD was reported from the foot of 25th
Street, near the Dundarave pier, in West Vancouver.
There were no sightings reported for Monday, November 21.
Sightings for Sunday, November 20
A GYRFALCON was seen along the Boundary Bay shoreline just east of Beach
Grove Park in Delta. It flew off toward the east.
At Blackie Spit in Surrey, sightings included 23 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 2
EURASIAN WIGEON, 2 WESTERN MEADOWLARKS, and, on the east side of
Farm Slough, a tan-striped WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.
In Vancouver's Stanley Park, 17 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS were seen
in the Ferguson Point area.
Sightings for Saturday, November 19
In Vancouver's Stanley Park, the second-year male KING EIDER was seen
in a SURF SCOTER flock just north of Ferguson Point. The last previous
report of this bird was at nearby Siwash Rock on November 12, so
Stanley Park seems like the best place to look for this bird.
In Port Moody, a late male WILSON'S WARBLER was seen in the 1000 block of
Alderside Road.
On the south side of the Tsawwassen ferry jetty in Delta, a HORNED LARK, 4
SNOW BUNTINGS, 5 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS, and a WILLET were seen.
The lark and buntings were in one flock near the boat launch at the end of
the gravel road.
The ROCK WREN was still present near the end of the Iona Island south jetty
in Richmond.
Birds seen at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta included 4 BARN OWLS, a
GREAT HORNED OWL, a CACKLING GOOSE, and an immature REDHEAD.
In Pitt Meadows, a gray-phase GYRFALCON was seen along Connecting Road
between Sharpe and McKechnie Roads, north of the Dewdney Trunk Road.
A PEREGRINE FALCON was also seen nearby.
