This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, December 1. Please
report sightings to Jon Fisher at 818-544-5009 (or e-mail to
JonF60@hotmail.com).

Eighteen NORTHERN FULMAR and two SHORT-TAILED SHEARWATERS were seen from
Point Vicente on the Palos Verdes Penninsula on November 27. Parking is
available at the Public Fishing Access parking area.

A LONG-TAILED DUCK, a male BLACK SCOTER and a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER were off
Dockweiler State Beach in El Segundo on November 29. Parking can be found
along the Pacific Coast Highway at the Hyperion outlook between Imperial and
Grand. Check near Lifeguard Platform #58 and #59.

A EURASIAN WIGEON was at Mountain Meadows Golf Course in San Dimas on
November 24. Take Fairplex north from the 10 Freeway and then go left on
Via Verde. The bird was in a small fenced pond about 500 feet west of
Fairplex along Via Verde.

Those with an interest in HOODED MERGANSERS should check the Soka University
Ponds near Mulholland Drive and Malibu Canyon Road and also the Woodley Golf
Course pond near the driving range in Van Nuys. Multiple birds have been
reported from both locations.

A LEAST FLYCACHER was found in Area 2 of El Dorado Park in Long Beach on
November 29. Take Snake Road past the 15 MPH speed limit sign and look in
the oaks on the north side of the road. Also in this part of Area 2 was a
TROPICAL KINGBIRD. A GRAY FLYCATCHER was in oaks near Restroom #38. In
Area 3, an AMERICAN REDSTART was north of Wardlow at the far northwest end
of the lakes. El Dorado Park is on Willow Street just west of the 605
Freeway. There is an entry fee of $4.

The THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD at Banning Park in Wilmington was reported through
November 24. The YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was also reported through the
24th. Banning Park is on the Pacific Coast Highway, just east of the 110
Freeway.

The TROPICAL KINGBIRD at West LA College was seen through December 1. The
bird moves around and one strategy is to wait at the ball field for the bird
to show up there.

At Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale, the SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was seen through
November 24. Look around Parking Lot #5, though it may been seen anywhere
in the general area. The entrance is on the north side of Arrow Highway
between Irwindale Ave. and the 605 Freeway. There is an entry fee on
weekends.

Three WINTER WRENS appeared this past week with one at Sand Dune Park in
Manhattan Beach on November 25th, another in Rolling Hills Estates the same
day, and a third along the San Gabriel River's West Fork Road on November
26th.

A VIRGINIA'S WARBLER was along the LA River on November 24. This bird was
half way between DeForest Park and the Artesia crossing in sycamores on the
hillside. At DeForest Park proper, a BELL'S VIREO continued in alders south
of the tennis courts.

A GRACE'S WARBLER was at Buckhorn Campground on November 25th. This may be
the same bird reported here earlier in the year. The bird was seen about 50
feet down the road from the locked exit gate at Buckhorn. You can park
outside the exit and walk down
the road to reach this spot.

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WABLER was at Camino Real Park in Ventura on November
27th. It was seen near the first parking lot next to the freeway.

The PAINTED REDSTART at Bonelli Regional Park was reported through December
1. Look for it near Restroom #8, especially in the oak on the median strip
between the road and parking area.

The PAINTED REDSTART at Elysian Park was reported through November 18. This
bird is in the Solano Canyon area of Elysian Park near Park and Academy.
Look for it in the maple trees north of the upper playground area.

A apparent second PAINTED REDSTART was found in the same area on November
27. This bird was in Chavez Ravine along Stadium Way, east of Academy Drive
and just east of the playground.

Also in this part of Chavez Ravine were two BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS and a
NASHVILLE WARBLER. On November 30, the Redstart was not refound, but a
SUMMER TANAGER previously reported here on October 27 was still present.

Yet another PAINTED REDSTART was reported from Big Dalton Canyon above
Glendora on November 30. The bird was near a fire ring at the picnic area
on the left side of the road as you enter the park.

This report is sponsored by the Los Angeles Audubon Society.
