This is the Voice of Audubon for Friday, August 12.
Avian Highlights for the week included a SEDGE WREN and a CACKLING
GOOSE at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord and the
WILSON'S PLOVER at South Beach in Chatham.
Other sightings at Great Meadows included an AMERICAN BITTERN, 22
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 42 KILLDEER, 6 GREATER YELLOWLEGS,
1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 7 SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPERS, 16 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 8
GREAT BLUE HERONS, 17 GREAT EGRETS, 3 GLOSSY IBISES, and
400 BARN SWALLOWS.
Notable sightings on the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge in the Greater
Newburyport area included an early adult BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER in
the Bill Forward Pool, 9 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 2 NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSHES and 1 LEAST FLYCATCHER. Other sightings on the
refuge included 1 AMERICAN WIGEON, 37 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 3
BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 1 GREATER SCAUP, 2 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-
HERONS, 22 GLOSSY IBISES, 3 OSPREY, 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 1
CLAPPER RAIL, 9 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 4 PIPING PLOVERS, 850
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 42 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 108 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 27 RUDDY TURNSTONES,
2800 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 127 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 49
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 1 RED KNOT, 2 PECTORAL SAND-
PIPERS, 1 DUNLIN, 3 STILT SANDPIPERS, 540 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS, 1 AMERICAN WOODCOCK, and 2 WILSON'S SNIPE.
An estimated 100,000 plus swallows (mostly TREE SWALLOWS) were
observed massing over Woodbridge Island in Newburyport Harbor in the
evening. Other sightings from Newburyport Harbor included 135 BLACK-
BELLIED PLOVERS, 322 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, at least 4
HUDSONIAN GODWITS, 1540 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 47
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 2 LITTLE GULLS, and 235
BONAPARTE'S GULLS.
A whale-watch trip out of Gloucester tallied sightings of 60 COMMON
EIDER, 1 WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, 1 HORNED GREBE, 16 GREATER
SHEARWATERS, 6 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 5 MANX SHEARWATERS,
12 NORTHERN GANNETS, 10 migrating SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS,
and 2 LAUGHING GULLS.
Reports from Nantucket include 2 SNOWY EGRETS, 7 GREAT EGRETS,
63 RUDDY TURNSTONES, 1 RED KNOT, 4 BLACK TERNS, and 1
LITTLE GULL.
