____ DUPAGE COUNTY ______________________________________
At Meacham Grove on August 10th, four immature LITTLE BLUE HERONS were
seen in the marsh east of the lake. From the parking lot, follow the
trail around the east end of the lake until you come to a wooden bench.
Meacham Grove (east lot) is located on Circle Drive, north of Route 20 /
Lake Street and east of Bloomingdale Road.
At Songbird Slough on August 10th, birds seen at the marsh include
BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, WILSON'S SNIPE, CASPIAN TERN, and a flyover
BROAD-WINGED HAWK.
A probable WHIP-POOR-WILL was seen flying around with a group of COMMON
NIGHTHAWKS on August 6th.
A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen at the Forest Ave. marsh in southern
DuPage County.
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES feeding immatures have been seen during few
weeks at West DuPage Woods / Elsen's Hill and Mallard Lake.
Recent highlights at Elsen's Hill include BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER,
TENNESSEE WARBLER, BROWN CREEPER, and RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH.
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS and COMMON NIGHTHAWKS are beginning to show
up at a number of locations.
____ KANE COUNTY _______________________________________
Some shorebirds are beginning to be seen along the Fox River from the
bridge between Jon J. Duerr / Blackhawk FP and Tekakwita Woods FP.
Shorebirds seen include PECTORAL SANDPIPER, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, LEAST SANDPIPER, and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER.
____ FERMILAB SIGHTINGS ________________________________
At FermiLab on Saturday (Aug. 13) three WILLETS were seen moving around
between Lake Law and A.E. Sea. Two, possibly three, WILSON'S PHALAROPES
were seen at the north end of A.E. Sea. A DUNLIN was also reported
being seen briefly at this location. Two SANDERLINGS were seen, one at
the above location and one at Lake Law on the SE gravel point. At the
west end of A.E. south of the Red Barn along the dug out mud channel,
birds seen include a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, STILT SANDPIPERS, SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS, SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, both YELLOWLEGS, many PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS, and other regulars. On Friday (Aug. 12), a RED-NECKED
PHALAROPE was seen at the north end of Dusaf Pond, but it was not
relocated on Saturday (Aug. 13).

The best parking location for Dusaf Pond is along the east side of
Blackhawk Blvd. (the first road on the right after entering from Batavia
Road / Route 59). Note that areas north of the lake and Che Che Pinqua
Blvd. are off limits to the public.
To view Lake Law and the west end of A.E. Sea, turn south on Sauk Circle
(four-way stop west of Blackhawk Blvd.) and park at the Red Barn
(Anderson Barn) by the "Bird-watching Area" sign. Walk south along the
berm trail to where the two lakes meet by the drain and waterpump (Lake
Law is on the right / west side and A.E Sea is on the left / east side).
To view the north end of A.E Sea, park along the gravel pulloff on the
south side of Batavia Road where the lake meets up with the road.
____ UPCOMING FIELD TRIPS ______________________________
Friday evening, August 19, 6:30 p,m. Pratt's Wayne Woods F.P.
Bring a picnic supper. This trip will be for breeding grassland species
and possible shorebirds. Meet in the overflow lot to the model
airplane/dog use field off of Powis Rd, (this is the gravel lot on the
left, north side of the road after entering and before the tunnel to the
main parking lot), north of Army Trail Rd. in Wayne.

Sunday afternoon, August 21, 3:00 p.m. Lake Calumet Area (Chicago).
The Lake Calumet region is a prime area for shorebirds (if the
conditions are right!) and unusual wading birds, such as Little Blue
Heron, and Snowy Egret. We will check several spots and end up at
Harborside Golf Course, where for those interested, we can eat dinner
and view the shorebirds from the veranda. We will meet at O'Brien Lock
and Dam parking lot. From I-94, exit at 130th St. Go east on 130th a
short distance to the entrance, which will be on your right (the
entrance is just before the steel bridge).
