--------------
On Dec 6, the DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER continues in Meder Canyon in
Santa Cruz. To get to this bird take Bay Street toward the campus and
then turn left on Meder Street. Park at the University Terrace
apartments and walk down the concrete service road past the last house
but before you cross the stream. There is a small willow patch and
the bird was calling at that location. A NASHVILLE WARBLER was also
in the area. At West Lake Pond, an ALEUTIAN CANADA GOOSE and CANVASBACK
were seen. (Matt Brady)
Directions from Steve Gerow:
The spot where this flycatcher was is closer to the north end of the
canyon, so it would be a quicker walk from the Meder Street access
(walk into the canyon via the service road at the west edge of
University Terrace Park, between Bay and Western Drive. This is
only a few blocks south of the UCSC main entrance.) From Meder Street,
after the road passes the tennis courts and continues south of the park,
it goes downhill fairly steeply for a short distance. After this hill,
pass the last house on the left on the hillside above the road, and a
springy area begins. There is a willow patch on the hillside on the
left, across the road from the creek. The upper parts of this patch are
extensively grown over with blooming German ivy (yellow-flowered vine),
and the flycatcher was staying almost entirely within the area with
these flowers. This species tends to stay within the foliage, so it is
probably best located by listening for its calls.
