SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

On Sunday December 4, Wes Fritz reported a LAPLAND LONGSPUR in the
hayfield on the west side of the Barstow sewage treatment plant. He also
reported 4 RED CROSSBILLS, a PLUMBEOUS VIREO, and an adult VERMILLION
FLYCATCHER at the Tees and Trees golf course in Barstow.

Stephen Myers reported results of a barge trip on Silverwood Lake on
Saturday December 3. Birds of note included six species of grebes
including a RED-NECKED GREBE (southeast corner of the lake), three COMMON
LOONS, nine species of ducks including at least four female COMMON
GOLDENEYES, 2 BALD EAGLES (one adult, one immature) and a PEREGRINE
FALCON.

There was a report of a SNOWY PLOVER crossing the road in front of
Highland Grove Elementary School in the city of Highland.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY

On Friday, December 2, Madeline Bauer reported a MERLIN feeding on one of
the snags in the vicinity of 66th and William in Mira Loma. She reports
spotting this bird at various times over the last month. There is
speculation it may be the suckleyi subspecies. She also reports LINCOLN’S
SPARROW in the tree on the golf course near 66th and Lorena. 66th is the
north border of Goose Creek Golf Course in Mira Loma. From I-15 north of
Norco or south of Hwy 60, go east on Limonite to Etiwanda, south where it
dead ends at 66th. Go west 3 blocks to William. There is no parking on
the south side of 66th.

On Saturday December 3 Madeline reported four continuing BLUE-WINGED TEAL
at the Riverside sewage ponds.

On Saturday December 3, Roger Higson birded between Parker and the dam on
the California side. There are numerous parks with good vegetation in
that area. He suggests reaching the habitat by driving north on the west
side of the river. Just before the dam you will pass the post office and
Parker Dam School on the left. Turn right on a dirt road opposite the
school entrance and drive towards the river. He spotted 3 male BARROW’S
GOLDENEYES and one female. He also reported 300 BUFFLEHEADS. Roger
suggests avoiding birding from the dam and from the east side near the dam
due to the level of homeland security patrols.

On Sunday December 4, Cathy McFadden reported the following birds from the
general area near Prado Regional Park: GRAY FLYCATCHER (near the
playground), two male VERMILION FLYCATCHERS (near baseball field and group
campground), various geese including a ROSS’S GOOSE, GREATER WHITE-
FRONTED GOOSE, and two CACKLING GEESE. On the lake there was a FULVOUS
WHISTLING DUCK. Along Euclid near the Chino airport was an adult light-
morph FERRUGINOUS HAWK and a WHITE-TAILED KITE. At Hellman and Pine she
observed an immature dark-morph FERRUGINOUS HAWK.

The BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER continues at Fairmount Park in Riverside
in the top of cypress trees at the corner of Banks and Redwood.

Sandy Koonce reported a continuing EASTERN PHOEBE at the San Jacinto
Wildlife Area. It was seen on the railing of the observation platform and
in the low bushes on the south side of the pond immediately west of the
observation platform.

On December 4, Chet McGaugh reported the following birds from the north
end of the Salton Sea: 10 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 2 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS,
GREATER SCAUP, female WHITE-WINGED SCOTER (found by Pete Siminski) and a
SANDERLING.

On December 4 Gerco Hoogeweg reported from Lake Perris and San Timoteo
Canyon. Birds of note included: 30 HORNED GREBE, 1 CLARKE’S GREBE, 2
COMMON LOON, 17 AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, 1 PEREGRINE FALCON, 30 BONAPARTE’S
GULL, 2 CASSIN’S KINGBIRD, 3 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and a large number of
ducks including REDHEAD, RIND-NECKED and AMERICAN WIGEON.

IMPERIAL COUNTY

David Pereksta reported from the Salton Sea on December 2. He reported a
DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER at the Wister Unit in the Eucalyptus trees between
the nature trail and the road. An adult male AMERICAN REDSTART continues
in the same general area. He also reported about 300 MOUNTAIN PLOVER in a
field at the NW corner of Sinclair and Highway 111. A MEW GULL was seen
at the outflow at the north end of Lack Road just south of Obsidian
Butte. RUDDY GROUND DOVE continue at Sperry and Eddins. A GREATER WHITE-
FRONTED GOOSE was seen in the large flocks of snow geese at the north end
of Vendel Road at dusk. A small flock (20-30) of SANDHILL CRANES came to
roost at the Vendel Road marshes. Three CLAPPER RAIL were seen at dusk in
the marshes at the north end of Vendel Road.

On Saturday, December 3, Bob Miller reported after a day of birding with
Palomar Audubon. Birds of note included: DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATHER, PACIFIC-
SLOPE FLYCATCHER and GRAY FLYCATCHER (continuing at Cattle Call Park in
Brawley), LEAST BITTERN and large flock of GAMBEL’S QUAIL (New River
Wetlands Project Brawley site), 18 BURROWING OWL (along top edege of
concrete ditch on the west side of Garst Road, ¼ mile north of Sinclair),
several large flocks of SANDILL CRANE (seen from Hwy 86 and Keystone Road
flying east to an unknown roosting area east of Dogwood Road)

On Sunday December 4 Bob Miller reported a juvenile TUNDRA SWAN at Willey
Lake. From Westmoreland Go north on Lack Road to Foulds, turn west and
take the first road toward the north, McNerny on the west side of the
ditch and go to the fence of the reservoir. Stop on the high ground of
the ditch just outside the gate as this is the only location high enough
to view the reservoir. He also reported numerous species of ducks in the
area. Bob reported a blue-morph ROSS’S GOOSE in the large flock of snow
geese off of Vendel Road at Unit 1. Bob also sighted a PRAIRIE FALCON in
that area. He also reported at least 40 MOUNTAIN PLOVER on the west side
of Lack Road about ¼ mile south of Walker Road.
