Codes for Birders in Orange County: channel 11 subcode 22 (national code).
We have a new accessory website that has recent photos of rarities and maps
of some birding spots in the County, including a map of Huntington Central
Park showing the "local" names for birding areas at:

Note: We may supply for many sightings (AT THE END OF THIS REPORT) links for
maps of those areas and aerial photos. Many of these are general maps. If
we have specific information from GPS readings, we will alert you to the
fact. After you go to the link, go to the BOTTOM of the form and choose
aerial photo (and adjust zoom factor) or the map (where eventually you will
adjust the zoom factor).

Yesterday at the "La Paz Railroad Tracks" a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER and a
hatch-year male BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRD were sighted. Directions by Jim
Pike are: Take the 405 south to La Paz. Go north and take the second left
at Chrisanta. Follow the S-curve and park at the lower stretch of the road
which has trees on both sides. Go around the gate on the left side of
Chrisanta, and head toward the tracks. A Chestnut-sided Warbler was within
25 yards in the willows to the left. The slope below the homes on the right
consists of bare ground and some acacia and oleander shrubs. In another 25
yards, just before reaching the channelized creek, the slope bends to the
right. It was at this corner that the BBHU was ruling over any other hummers
that came near 'his' upslope tree tobacco. Thre was also a HOODED ORIOLE in
the area, along with Bullocks Orioles and Western Tanagers.

Yesterday (Tuesday) a WINTER WREN was at the extreme southwest edge of the
Victoria Street Pond. As one walks towards the ocean from Victoria Street
(with Talbert Park on the left), there is a dead pine tree (a small planted
pine) on the left just after the pond ends and the tules start. The wren
was just inside the fence between the dead pine and the next planted pine (a
live one).

Also yesterday on private property along Ortega Highway (Tree of Life
Nursery), a continuing AMERICAN REDSTART was sighted.

Last Sunday the GRAY FLYCATCHER, first seen the day before, continued on the
north end of the golf course along San Juan Creek, east of the Freeway, in
San Juan Capistrano.

Last Sunday on private property (Laguna Woods), a BLACK AND WHITE WARBLER
was seen farthest upstream on the Aliso Creek Nature Trail.

Last Friday at Huntington Central Park, east side, the EURASIAN WIGEON,
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, and SUMMER TANAGER all continued.

Last Friday, and again on Tuesday, we got reports (and pictures) of a
DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER on the edge of the Mesa Verde golf course in Costa
Mesa. To get to this location, go south on Harbor from the 405 fwy, and
then take a quick right (west) on Gisler. Drive to the end of Gisler and
park. I jumped a gate so as to get closer to the golf course, but I don't
recommend this. I suggest taking the bike path up to the edge of the Santa
Ana river (ie, flood control channel). Head south a short distance until the
fence on your left ends. At this point, you'll see a diagonal trail leading
down through sage scrub that terminates at another fenced channel. This is
the best starting point/listening post for the bird.

Two REDDISH EGRETS were seen on Friday at Hamilton Street at the Santa Ana
River. (We probably have 4 individuals of this species in the County right
now).

Last Friday at Upper Newport Bay 4 male and one female EURASIAN WIGEONS were
recorded. Also that day off the Newport Pier there was a dark morph
NORTHERN FULMAR, and a POMARINE JAEGER (along with 8+ Parasitic Jaegers).

On Thursday the continuing PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER was sighted from the
Seapoint Ave overlook of the south end of Bolsa Chica, and the GRAY
FLYCATCHER and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW continued on the west side of
Huntington Central Park, the west side of Shipley Nature Center.
