I am saddened to report that the pond at Bald Knob is now being drained. I
was out there this evening (8/11) and was talking to a turnpike worker who
told me that the property has been sold and a plan to build houses is
already in the works. Also nearby is supposed to be a strip mall. The pond
is about 4-5 feet down right know and there is good shorebird habitat.
Birds present were lesser yellowlegs, pectoral sandpiper, 3 solitary
sandpiper, 6 semi-palmated sandpiper, 6 least sandpiper, 3 spotted
sandpiper, killdeer. This pond has been visited by some incredible birds
over the years and this is a tremendous loss for our area. (MV).
At Bald Knob on the evening of 8/7, 4 solitary sandpiper, 2 pectoral
sandpiper, 12 semi-palmated sandpiper, 2 least sandpiper, 3 spotted
sandpiper, ring-necked duck, several PRAIRIE WARBLER, several warbling
vireo (MV); on 8/8, 2 solitary sandpiper, lesser yellowlegs, pectoral
sandpiper, semi-palmated plover, semi-palmated sandpiper, least sandpiper,
2 spotted sandpiper, ring-necked duck, NORTHERN HARRIER, 8 American
kestrel (MV); on 8/12, 1 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 2 solitary sandpiper,
pectoral sandpiper, 5 spotted sandpiper, least sandpiper, semi-palmated
sandpiper, greater yellowlegs, lesser yellowlegs, killdeer (MV); also on
8/12, BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, and 8 additional
pectoral sandpiper (RG). On 8/13 the BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, pectoral
sandpipers, and lesser yellowlegs were all still present (GM).
At the Toy Airport on 8/11, NORTHERN HARRIER, broad-winged hawk, red-
tailed hawk (MV).
On the evening of 8/7 at Dashield's Dam, 16 double-crested cormorant, ring-
billed gull; on 8/12, 23 double-crested cormorant, belted kingfisher, 7
great blue heron (MV).
At Allegheny River and Pine Creek in Etna on 8/13, sightings included
adult transitional HORNED GREBE (white cheek patches, rufous throat,
reddish lores), 9 great blue heron, 2 belted kingfisher, 4 spotted
sandpiper, 8 killdeer, 6 least sandpiper (DY).
Beaver County:
On 8/7 at Beaver River, CASPIAN TERN, ~70 ring-billed gull, 3 herring
gull, American coot, 2 belted kingfisher, spotted sandpiper (MV).
At the nest site in Industry on 8/7, 3 osprey (MV).
At the Anderson Road farm pond in Darlington Township on 8/7, 4 solitary
sandpiper (MV).
At the Big Beaver Borough Wetland on 8/7, 6 solitary sandpiper, least
sandpiper, semi-palmated sandpiper, 15 great blue heron, 3 green heron
(MV).
At Independence Marsh on 8/8, 6 solitary sandpiper, 2 pectoral sandpiper,
semi-palmated plover, 5 spotted sandpiper, least sandpiper, semi-palmated
sandpiper, 5 green heron (MV).
At Little Blue on 8/8, 2 adult STILT SANDPIPER, SANDERLING, 19 semi-
palmated plover, 4 lesser yellowlegs, solitary sandpiper, 5 semi-palmated
sandpiper, 3 spotted sandpiper, rose-breasted grosbeak, white-eyed vireo;
on the evening of 8/10, greater yellowlegs, 3 lesser yellowlegs, 3
solitary sandpiper, 4 pectoral sandpiper, 6 semi-palmated sandpiper, semi-
palmated plover (MV).
Clarion County:
Near Sligo on 8/13, 10+ orchard oriole, 3+ Baltimore oriole, WILLOW
FLYCATCHER, unknown flycatcher sp. (CW).
Erie County:
>From last week at Presque Isle State Park: on 8/2 at Beach 11, OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER; on 8/2 at the Beach 10 parking lot, northern mockingbird; on
8/5 at Gull Point, AMERICAN AVOCET (JM).
On 8/13 at Gull Point, Presque Isle State Park, 2 AMERICAN AVOCET,
WHIMBREL, NORTHERN HARRIER, RUDDY TURNSTONE, COMMON TERN, FORSTER'S TERN
(JM).
Lawrence County:
At the Slippery Rock creek at the bridge below Heinz House Camp on 8/12, 7
common merganser (BM).
