on Thursday, December 8. This week’s roster includes sightings of
SANDHILL CRANE, PURPLE FINCH, GOLDEN EAGLE, SNOW BUNTING, ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWK, WESTERN TANAGER, FOX SPARROW, PIED BILLED GREBE, NORTHERN
GOSHAWK, NORTHERN BOBWHITE and PINE SISKIN. Extra-limital reports
include HARLEQUIN DUCK, RAZORBILL, SNOW BUNTING and BLACK GUILLEMOT
It should be noted that the Avalon Seawatch, located at either 7th
Street (if the construction crew is “quiet” that day) or on the beach
or the jetty at 8th Street (if
construction at 7th Street is disruptive that day) at the north end of
Avalon, will continue through December 22.
The SANDHILL CRANE continues to be seen the Cape May area this week.
Most commonly reports are of the bird being seen from Batts Lane on
Cape Island and a few flyover sightings. Also in Cape May this week
were an immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK, flyover PURPLE FINCH, PINE SISKIN
(flyover in West Cape May), 3 PIED-BILLED GREBE at the Meadows, 3 FOX
SPARROW at the Northwood’s Center and 6 PURPLE SANDPIPERS seen on a
jetty at Higbee’s Beach. An encouraging 8-10 NORTHERN BOBWHITE were
spotted on 12/3 at the “Beanery” (Rea’s Farm) parking lot. This
species has all but disappeared from Cape Island all together.
Moving north, 17 MARBLED GODWIT were reported from Nummy’s Island.
Flyover SNOW BUNTINGS were seen from CMBO’s Center for Research and
Education in Goshen. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was reported from Jake’s
Landing. GOLDEN EAGLE and a female type WESTERN TANAGER were seen at
Brigantine Nation Wildlife Refuge. The Tanager was seen in some
hollies near the Visitor’s Center.
A bit further north was a report of a BLACK GUILLEMOT seen from
Barnegat Light. The Guillemot was first discovered on 12/ 3 and has
continued to be seen as of the last report on 12/7. Also seen from
Barnegat Light were 26 HARLEQUIN DUCKS, fly by RAZORBILL and 30 SNOW
BUNTINGS.
CMBO’s bookstore hours are as follows: Northwood Center in Cape May
Point will be open Thursday through Monday, 9-4:30 (CLOSED: Tuesday and
Wednesday). The Center for Research and Education on Route 47 in Goshen
is open 7 days a week, 9-4:30. Both Centers will be closed the week
between Christmas and New Year’s, from December 24 - January 1.
