Compiled 13 August, 2005
This is the Saturday, August 13, 2005 Missouri Bird Alert, a
statewide service of the Audubon Society of Missouri, serving the
birding community of Missouri since 1901. The bird alert is compiled
from reports submitted by ASM members and other birders throughout
the state. The report includes birds that are listed as rare, casual,
or accidental on the 2003 Annotated Checklist of Missouri Birds.
Species that appear in ALL CAPS in the “Species Mentioned” section
are listed as “casual” or “accidental”. (Note that some birds may be
considered rare only during a particular season or in a particular
part of the state.)
A rainy weather system brought some interesting birds to the state
today, Saturday, August 13. In the northwestern part of the state,
Doug Willis got rare looks at a BLACK RAIL at Bean Lake (Platte Co.)
at about 3:00 p.m. The bird was seen sneaking out of the vegetation
at the south end of the lake near a mudflat where a number of
shorebirds were feeding. To reach this pool, go west on Swamp Rd.
(accessed from Mo. Hwy. 45, just north of the town of Iatan). Swamp
Rd. eventually turns into River Rd. Continuing on River Rd. will
eventually take you to the south end of Bean Lake (Missouri DeLorme
Atlas Page 26, C2).
At Muskrat Lake (Buchanan Co.), Jack Hilsabeck and Larry Lade
observed two RUDDY TURNSTONES on Saturday afternoon.
In the east, Scott Schuette observed one RED-NECKED PHALAROPE near
the Winfield Lock & Dam (Lincoln Co.). The bird was a few hundred
yards north of the causeway over Sandy Slough.
Earlier in the week:
In the northwest, Bob Fisher reported one LEAST TERN at Lake Contrary
on Friday, August 12. This bird was not relocated on Saturday. A
TRICOLORED HERON first reported by Doug Willis on Saturday, August 6,
remained at least through Wednesday, August 10. It has not been
reported this weekend.
In the Columbia area, at least one MISSISSIPPI KITE was still being
seen by Harold and Kathleen Anderson at the Bear Creek Trail parking
lot off of Garth Ave. (Boone Co.). This bird was last reported on
Friday, August 12.
In the St. Louis area, David Rogles reported on Friday, August 12
that the male PAINTED BUNTING continued to frequent the Katy Trail SP
Weldon Spring access (St. Charles Co.).
