There were 3 reports of very unseasonal birds in the Calgary birding area
late this past week. Brent Johner reported a CAPE MAY WARBLER in his yard
in the Oakridge subdivision of Calgary on Thursday, December 1; then on
Friday, December 2, Dwight Knapik observed an immature WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW on the grounds at the Calgary Zoo. On Saturday, December 3, Rob
Worona observed a WILSON'S SNIPE at Carburn Park in Calgary. For more
information on that bird, call Rob at 270-0674.
Of our winter visitors to the area, BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS have been fairly
well-reported and in fairly good numbers, but winter finches have been
almost non-existent. The only report of COMMON REDPOLLS thus far was from
Nanton, Alberta where Terry Korolyk observed a flock of 20 along the
southern perimeter on November 28.
Bill Wilson reported 5 PINE GROSBEAKS in the Kananaskis Lakes region on
Sunday, December 4. NORTHERN SHRIKES have been fairly well-reported;
GYRFALCONS have been scarce and there have been only a few reports thus far
of SNOWY OWLS. There have been 3 NORTHERN HAWK-OWL reports (mostly on Hwy
68), and NORTHERN PYGMY OWLS have been reported on Hwy 68, in the west end
of Fish Creek PP and at Winchell Lake south of Water Valley. Six
SHORT-EARED OWLS were at Ovan's Slough on Sunday, Dec. 4. Go north from Hwy
1A on the Horse Creek Rd west of Cochrane and stay north on the gravel road
for 3 kms where the Horse Creek Rd intersects due westward. SNOW BUNTINGS
have been seen in mostly small flocks thus far, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS have been
around in good numbers, but BALD EAGLES have been few.
The next scheduled update of the Calgary bird alert is on Monday, December
12.
