Since the Arcata Bird Box is still down this is a summary of reports from
Nwcalbird, word of mouth, etc. and was compiled 11 December 2005 at 5:00
p.m. This is a long summary since I was out of the country for a couple of
weeks. Most birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the “highlights” section have about 50 (plus or minus 5)
records of occurrence in Northwestern California as defined in Stan Harris’s
“Northwestern California Birds” (3rd
edition, 2005). Good Birding!

The DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER was still present near the BLM office. It was
found in a Eucalyptus tree just west of the BLM at Mad River Rapids R.V.

The DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER was present today in the lot on the west side of
Janes Road, just opposite to the Fiesta Grill (Gary Bloomfield).

A GLAUCOUS GULL was found on the Elk River Spit in Eureka today. One male
EURASIAN WIDGEON was seen from the Sewage Pond seen from the Elk River
Wildlife Area trail (Rob Hewitt)

A YELLOW WARBLER was seen at the Mad River Rapids RV Park where the
Dusky-capped flycatcher has been frequenting (Rob Fowler).
A CHUCK-WILLS WIDOW was brought into the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. It
was found along Highway 101 in DEL NORTE COUNTY. This is the first record
for Del Norte and only the 3rd record for California (Greg Frankfurter,
Humboldt Wildlife Rehabilitation Center).

A light morph juvenile ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen off of the Bayside Cutoff
and Highway 101. There were also 4 HOODED MERGANSERS in the vicinity also
(Rob Fowler, Jenn Curtis).
The DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER was refound in the vacant lot on the west side
of Janes Road, just opposite of Fiesta Grill, in Arcata (Rob Fowler, Jenn
Curtis).
An AMERICAN BITTERN was flushed from the NE corner of the 1st Oxidation
Ponds in Arcata (Tom Leskiw).
A EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL was seen on the Butcher Slough Log Pond (Stan
Harris).

Two orioles were found in a non-flowering Rhododendron at 2828 Californian
Street in Eureka. One was a adult male BALTIMORE but the other wasn’t
conclusively identified (Tom Leskiw).
Several Herring Gulls were seen on the Elk River Spit in Eureka. One adult
basic THAYER’S GULL was seen off of Woodley Island. In the domestic geese
flock at the west end of the V-street Loop was 1 BLUE SNOW GOOSE, 2 ALEUTIAN
CACKLING GEESE, and 1 GREATER-WHITE FRONTED GOOSE. Two PEREGRINE FALCONS
were plucking shorebirds atop a power tower here (Rob Hewitt).
The DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER was relocated in a the largest Eucalyptus on the
west side of Janes Road, south of Mad River Gardens Nursery (Jared Wolfe,
Tristan Mckee, Pablo Herrera, Terri Klemetson). Jared and Tristan later had
a GLAUCOUS-WINGED X GLAUCOUS HYBRID GULL at I Street at the Arcata Marsh.
A EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL was seen at the Arcata Oxidation Ponds. This is
possibly the same bird seen yesterday (Stan Harris).

A HARLAN’S RED-TAILED HAWK, returning for its 7th winter (fide Elias Elias)
was seen off of the Bayside Cutoff and Highway 101 (Sean McAllister).

At the North Jetty a ROCK SANDPIPER, 1 male HARLEQUIN DUCK, 2 ANCIENT
MURRELETS, and 10 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES and 2 adult THAYER’S GULLS were
seen. On the V-street Loop the BLUE SNOW GOOSE, 2 CACKLING and 2 ALEUTIAN
CACKLING GEESE, AND 3 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen (Marshall Iliff).
8 Dec.

Seven PALM WARBLERS were found together at the Arcata Marsh; they were 20
meters west of the railroad tracks on I Street (Elias Elias).
The adult FERRUGINOUS HAWK was seen off of Mad River Road in the Arcata
Bottoms. Three CATTLE EGRETS were seen at the Moxon Dairy (Moxon Road in
Arcata Bottoms), 2 Merlin somewhere in the bottoms; 1 SNOW GOOSE and 1
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen at the V-street Loop. Two FORSTER’S
TERNS were seen at the foot of I Street at the Arcata Marsh (Kerry Ross).
9 Dec.

At the Arcata Marsh one NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was under the deck at the
interpretive center, 1 BLUE-WINGED TEAL was at the north end of the Log Pond
and 1 AMERICAN BITTERN was also present at the pond, 1 SNOW GOOSE was in a
flock of Canada Geese west of Gearheart Marsh, 6 PALM WARBLERS were at I
Street and the railroad crossing, and 1 EURASIAN WIDGEON was at Gearheart
Marsh (Elias Elias, Stan Harris).
The HARLAN’S HAWK was seen off of the Bayside Cutoff and Highway 101 (Rob
Fowler, Tristan Mckee, Ryan Salmon).
Four probable SNOW GEESE were seen with Aleutian Cackling Geese near Hookton
Road, just south of Eureka (Sean McAllister).
A hatch-year LARK SPARROW and 2 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were in a
residential yard in McKinleyville (Kerry Ross).
10 Dec.

Highlights at Mad River Slough Wildlife Area (Arcata Bottoms) today were: 15
SNOW GEESE (flyovers), 1-2 AMERICAN
BITTERNS, 3 SHORT-EARED OWLS, 1 SAY'S PHOEBE, and 2 flyover LAPLAND
LONGSPURS. The BLUE SNOW GOOSE, 4-5 “CACKLING” GEESE (2 were Aleutians), and
2 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were present in the domestic geese flock off
of the V-Street Loop (Rob Fowler, Jherimie Kellerman).
Off of the boat ramp at I Street at the Arcata Marsh 2 ROSS’S GEESE and 1
SNOW GOOSE was seen in a flock of mixed geese. There were also 35 Aleutian
Cackling Geese in the flock. At Klopp Lake there was 1 RED KNOT and 1
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. Three swallows were also seen (Elias Elias).
11 Dec.

A PRAIRIE FALCON was seen in the grazed area at Mad River Slough Wildlife
Area in the Arcata Bottoms (Rob Fowler).
The DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER was seen today. The bird was present along the
fence on the east side of the Mad River Rapids R.V. Park (Scott Carey).
At the Arcata Marsh the EURASIAN WIDGEON was seen at Gearheart Marsh. Three
RED KNOT were seen on the islands at Klopp Lake. One immature BALD EAGLE was
seen flying towards Eureka over Arcata Bay (Kristen Brown, Eric Concannon,
Marci Jensen).
