You have reached the Cape May Birding Hotline, a service of New Jersey
Audubon Society’s Cape May Bird Observatory. Due to scheduling
conflicts this week’s message was prepared on Wednesday, December 14.
This week’s roster includes sightings of ICELAND GULL, late LAUGHING
GULLS, HORNED LARKS, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, WHITE PELICAN, BALTIMORE ORIOLE,
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, EURASIAN WIGEON, SNOWY OWL, SHORT-EARED OWL,
RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and NORTHERN GOSHAWK.
It should be noted that the Avalon Seawatch, located at either 7th
Street (if the construction crew is “quiet” that day) or on the beach
or the jetty at 8th Street (if construction at 7th Street is disruptive
that day) at the north end of Avalon, will continue through December
22.
Seven WHITE PELICANS were spotted from the “Beanery” (Rea’s Farm) on
the morning of 12/11, flying in a north-easterly direction.
Interestingly seven WHITE PELICANS were reported from Sandy Hook on
that very same evening. Also in Cape May this week were a “darkish”
first winter ICELAND GULL and three LAUGHING GULLS in the area of the
second avenue jetty. On 12/ 11 there were about a dozen HORNED LARKS
and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR seen from the Cape May County Airport. The
SANDHILL CRANE continues to bee seen on Cape Island. Also on 12/11 were
two BALTIMORE ORIOLES in the Cape May State Park area, an
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER at Higbee’s and on 12/12 a drake EURASIAN WIGEON
spotted on Bunker Pond at the State Park. A SNOWY OWL was reported from
Ocean City at 23rd. and Beach, on 12/12. Today (12/14) at Higbee’s
Beach were RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and an adult NORTHERN GOSHAWK.
Further up the bayshore were two SHORT-EARED OWLS at Jakes Landing on
12/10. There were two AMERICAN WOODCOCK spotted flying over the parking
lot of CMBO’s Center for Research and Education on 12/11. At
Brigantine, on 12/13 there was a GOLDEN EAGLE and a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK.
CMBO’s bookstore hours are as follows: Northwood Center in Cape May
Point will be open every day until Dec. 24, with the exception of Dec
18, when we will be closed. At the start of 2006 we will resume a
normal schedule of being open Thursday-Monday 9-4:30. The Center for
Research and Education on Route 47 in Goshen is open 7 days a week,
9-4:30. Both Centers will be closed the week between Christmas and New
Year’s, from December 24 - January 1.
The Cape May Birding Hotline is a service of the New Jersey Audubon
Society’s Cape May Bird Observatory and details sightings from Cape
May, Cumberland, and Atlantic Counties. Updates are typically made on
Thursday evenings. Please report sightings of rare or unusual birds to
CMBO at 609-884-2736. Sponsorship for this hotline comes from the
support of CMBO members and business members, and should you not be a
member, we cordially invited to join. Individual membership is $35 per
year; $45 for families. You can call either center to become a member
or visit. Become a member in person and you’ll receive a FREE copy of
BIRDS OF NEW JERSEY (in addition to member discount in the stores).
Thanks for calling and good birding.
