This is the Thursday, December 15, 2005 Missouri Rare Bird Alert, a
statewide service of the Audubon Society of Missouri, serving the
birding community of Missouri since 1901. The bird alert is compiled
from reports submitted by ASM members and other birders throughout
the state. (This report includes sightings reported between 8 – 15
December 2005.)

** NOTE: The report includes birds that are listed as rare, casual,
or accidental on the 2003 Annotated Checklist of Missouri Birds (with
revisions in 2004 and 2005). Species that appear in ALL CAPS in the
“Species Mentioned” section are listed as “casual” or “accidental”.

NORTHWEST

Following a significant snowfall, Larry Lade found one SNOW BUNTING
in the company of HORNED LARKS and LAPLAND LONGSPURS, all feeding
along cleared roads south of Lake Contrary (Buchanan Co.), on
Thursday, Dec. 8. The bird was not relocated in subsequent days.
While attempting to relocate this bird, however, Larry Lade saw one
MERLIN in the same area on Saturday, Dec. 10. On Monday, Dec. 12,
Larry found one PRAIRIE FALCON perched on top of a silo just south of
Lake Contrary.

Near Kneib CA (Buchanan Co.), on the south side of Lake Contrary,
Larry Lade found one NORTHERN SHRIKE on a utility line on Thursday,
Dec. 15.

On the Squaw Creek CBC (Holt Co.) Wednesday, Dec. 14, birders located
one GRAY CATBIRD (found by Larry Rizzo and Larry Lade near Big Lake),
one RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, two PILEATED WOODPECKERS, one NORTHERN
GOSHAWK, one FIELD SPARROW, and one EASTERN TOWHEE.

KANSAS CITY AREA

On Saturday, Dec. 10, Ellen and Jim Zellmer found four TRUMPETER
SWANS (three adults, one immature) at the south beach area of Lake
Jacomo (Jackson Co.).

COLUMBIA AREA

An adult female COMMON REDPOLL has been attending the feeders in the
back yard of Paul and Becky McKenzie (2311 Grandview Dr., Columbia,
MO 65203; phone: 573-445-3019) since Wednesday, Dec. 14. This bird
was seen six times between 7:25 and 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 15. On
both days, the bird was not seen after 11 a.m. If going to the
McKenzie residence, please be sure to ring the doorbell; do not walk
into be back yard as this could disturb the birds that people are
inside waiting to see.

Directions: From I-70 take the Stadium Blvd. exit (Exit #124). Go
south on Stadium to Broadway. / Go right (west) on Broadway. / When
Broadway goes up a big hill and turns south you will believe you're
on the same road but the name will have changed to Scott Blvd. / Go
south on Scott Blvd. Chapel Hill will T onto Scott on your left.
The next right is Gillespie Bridge Rd. / Turn right (west) onto
Gillespie Bridge Rd. The first left is Mesa. The second left is
Kendallwood. Turn left onto Kendallwood. / It is a very short block
(200 feet or so) to Grandview Circle on your left. Turn left onto
Grandview Cir. The McKenzie home is the second on the right, a
yellow house with white mailbox and a dirt pile on the driveway.

One immature TUNDRA SWAN, first reported by Harold and Kathleen
Anderson on Friday, Dec. 2, was still present as of Tuesday, Dec. 13,
reported Vanessa Melton, Kathleen Anderson, and Sandi Elbert.

ST. LOUIS AREA

At Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary (formerly known as Riverlands
EDA or REDA) (St. Charles Co.), David Rogles located one first-winter
GLAUCOUS GULL in Ellis Bay near the observation tower on Thursday,
Dec. 8. On Wednesday, Dec. 14, Charlene Malone reported one second-
winter LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and one adult THAYER’S GULL at
Riverlands.

Swans continue to be observed in numbers at Riverlands, with the
majority by far being TRUMPETER SWANS (as many as 124 TRUMPETER SWANS
were reported by David Rogles on Wednesday, Dec. 6). Three TUNDRA
SWANS were photographed by Mike Thelen on Sunday, Dec. 11.

On Saturday, Dec. 10, several groups of birders saw one LONG-TAILED
DUCK at Riverlands. The regular PEREGRINE FALCON was perched on the
Clark Bridge over the Mississippi River.

At Creve Couer Lake (St. Louis Co.), Charlene Malone reported one
ROSS’S GOOSE mixed in with other geese on Sunday, Dec. 11. John
Solodar reported two immature ROSS’S GEESE there on Monday, Dec. 12.
And one WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was observed at Creve Couer Lake on
Wednesday, Dec. 14 by Torrey Berger.

A single GREAT EGRET continues to hold out at the Sandy Slough at
Winfield Dam (Lincoln Co.), reported Charlene Malone.
