Thank you for calling the Texas Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Houston Audubon
Society. This update was made Wednesday December 21 at 8:30PM. Highlights of this
tape are GREATER FLAMINGO* and DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER*. To report your
sightings please call (713) 464-2473 or email the compiler at
Sngcanary@yahoo.com.
On the Upper Texas Coast a second winter CALIFORNIA GULL (Larus californium) was
found on East Beach in Galveston during the Galveston CBC. A lingering
PROTHONOTARY WARBLER (Protonotaria citrea) was seen on Pelican Island, also
during the count. The LEAST GREBE (Tachybaptus dominicus) is still present at
Cullinan Park in the South Houston area.
In the Coastal Bend area a banded GREATER FLAMINGO* (Phoenicopterus ruber) was
seen again on Dec. 18 on Poverty Reef south of Bludworth Island between Carlos
Bay and the Inter-coastal Waterway. This area is only accessible by boat.
In South Central Texas a TROPICAL PARULA (Parula pitiayumi) is being seen in San
Antonio on Ave. A in Brackenridge Park. To reach Ave. A take the Mulberry Ave.
exit off of Hwy 281. Go east past the driving range on the left. You will pass
over the San Antonio River. Ave. A is immediately to the right after crossing the
river. (The river is not much more than a creek here). The bird has been seen
mostly towards the end of the street.
In the Rio Grande Valley an adult BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE (Rissa pterodactyl) was
seen at Boca Chica Jetties today, Dec. 21. A DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER* (Myiarchus
tuberculifer) is being seen again this year in the same location as last winter,
east of Los Indios near Cannon Road. To reach this area take Military Highway
west from Los Indios. Look for the rest stop with the old cannon. Go .6 miles
west of this rest stop on Military and turn north on the dike road. Go .6 miles
on this road to the curve. The bird is being seen in this area.
In the Trans-Pecos a LEWIS’S WOODPECKER (Melanerpes lewis) is still present at
Frijole Ranch in Guadalupe Mountains National Park.
Thank you for calling the Texas Rare Bird Alert.
