EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS -

This is the Voice of Audubon for Monday, August 15.

A CACKLING GOOSE that was found at the Great Meadows Refuge in
Concord last week was still present over the weekend. The goose has also
been seen in cornfields along Old Bedford Road off Route he 62, a short
distance east of Monsen Road, which is the entrance road to the Great Meadows
Refuge. A SEDGE WREN seen at Great Meadows last Friday has not been
positively sighted since then.

Among other birds found at Great Meadows were 2 GREEN-WINGED TEAL,
19 GREAT EGRETS, 2 SNOWY EGRETS, a GREEN HERON, 2 BLACK-
CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, a GLOSSY IBIS, a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER,
2 NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS, and 400 BARN SWALLOWS.

Weekend reports from the Parker River Refuge at Plum Island included a
NORTHERN SHOVELER, a HOODED MERGANSER, a LEAST BITTERN, a
LITTLE BLUE HERON, 8 GLOSSY IBISES, a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 3
NORTHERN HARRIERS, a calling CLAPPER RAIL across from the boat ramp,
2 VIRGINIA RAILS, a WHIMBREL, 2 RED KNOTS, 85 WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPERS, 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 8 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS,
a LITTLE GULL at the Bill Forward Pool, and many thousands of TREE
SWALLOWS congregated over the dunes and salt marshes.

Among the thousands of shorebirds and terns located in the vicinity of South
Beach in Chatham, assorted highlights included 8 BLACK SCOTERS, 3 GREATER
SHEARWATERS, 9 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 2 MANX SHEARWATERS, 7
WHIMBRELS, a MARBLED GODWIT, 2 WILSON'S PHALAROPES, 7
PARASITIC JAEGERS, 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, an ARCTIC
TERN, 3 BLACK TERNS, and 2 BLACK SKIMMERS.

At Belle Isle Marsh in East Boston there was a PEREGRINE FALCON, a VIRGINIA
RAIL, 90 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 70 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 730
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, a WESTERN SANDPIPER, a WILLOW
FLYCATCHER, a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, and 6 SALTMARSH
SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS.

A whale-watching trip out of Provincetown recorded 6000 WILSON'S STORM-
PETRELS, 4 NORTHERN GANNETS, and a BLACK TERN.

Miscellaneous reports included a GREEN HERON, a NORTHERN HARRIER,
and an AMERICAN KESTREL at the Daniel Webster Sanctuary in Marshfield; 2
COOPER'S HAWKS and NORTHERN HARRIER at the Burrage Pond Wildlife
Management Area in Hanson; 2 WHIMBRELS, 100 ROSEATE TERNS, and a
BLACK TERN at the Allen's Pond Sanctuary in South Dartmouth; a SOLITARY
SANDPIPER and a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER in Pembroke; and a
COMMON RAVEN that was seen flying over the Wayland Country Club
off Route 27.
