Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was recorded on
Monday, August 15 at 9:55 a.m. To report a bird sighting, leave a message after the
recording, or to bypass the recorded message, press the pound key on your touch tone
phone. To speak to a naturalist, please phone 221-4500 during office hours.

A juvenile LITTLE STINT was observed east of Irricana on Friday, August 12. The
bird was studied by Terry Korolyk through an 80mm spotting scope with a 32X wide
angle eyepiece at distances as close as 10-20 yards between 2:00 - 2:30 pm. Terry
could not obtain a picture of the bird. Several other observers visited the site on
Saturday, August 13, but they did not relocate the bird. This might be Alberta's
first record of the species if documented. The bird was on the mudflats at the
slough which is on the south side of Twp Rd 273 approximately 1/2 km east of Hwy 9.
Other shorebirds reported by Terry over the weekend included 2 juvenile RUDDY
TURNSTONES seen in the afternoon of Saturday, August 13 at Clear Lake, 15 kms east
of Stavely on Twp Rd 142. The birds were on a sandy peninsula seen off a track that
runs eastward from a N/S road that runs down the west flank about halfway down the
west side of the lake. On Friday, August 12, Terry Korolyk observed a WESTERN
SANDPIPER at the Cattleland Feedlots Slough in the N/E corner of the Hwys 817-564
junction north of Strathmore. Large numbers of shorebirds were east of Calgary on
August 12. At Cattleland August 12, Terry reported 500 STILT SANDPIPERS, 1000
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS and 8 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS. At the Twp Rd 273 slough he
observed another 200 STILT SANDPIPERS and 6 juvenile SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS in a
flock of 200 mostly LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS. On Sunday, August 14, Andrew Slater
reported 300 STILT SANDPIPERS were at Cattleland. Andrew also reported on August 14
an immature PEREGRINE FALCON was pursuing shorebirds at the sloughs at the first
four-way road junction on Hwy 817 north of Strathmore.

Migrating warblers reported recently included a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER seen by Milt
& Elaine Spitzer, Walter & Lois Zwick and Jean Dunn on August 13 at
Wyndham-Carseland PP. Banders at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary banded a TOWNSEND'S
WARBLER on Aug 12 and then banded a MOURNING WARBLER on August 14. Carol Coulter in
Calgary Southview had an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER in her yard on Wednesday, August 10.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, August 18.
