This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for December 28, 2005,
sponsored by the New Mexico Ornithological Society. When phone numbers are given

and Red-throated Loons, Rosy-Finches, Eurasian Wigeon, Green Kingfisher,
Long-tailed Ducks, Red-necked Grebe, Barrow's Goldeneyes.

In San Juan County:
CL and DP had a male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE at the Navajo Dam spillway on
December 18.
In Sandoval County:
MB reported an immature RED-NECKED GREBE on Cochiti Lake on December 15.
BW saw it on December 21, JO on December 22, CL on December 25 with a
CALIFORNIA GULL and a COMMON GOLDENEYE.
In San Miguel County:
JK had a WINTER WREN on December 17 off Hwy. 63 south of the Fish
Hatchery north of Pecos.
JP, JO, and WW on December 10 at Conchas Lake saw an immature
RED-THROATED LOON in the northeast arm. In the old Corp of Engineers residence area
there was an immature YELLOW-BELLIED SPSUCKER. BL saw 12 HORNED GREBES, and an
adult CALIFORNIA GULL on December 11. BW on December 19 had the Red-throated, a
PACIFIC LOON, 13 COMMON LOONS, and two WOOD DUCKS.
BW, JNM, and CB on December 19 at the Clabber Hill Ranch near Conchas
Lake found two LONG-EARED OWLS and two BROWN THRASHERS. Call 868-3351 for
permission to bird on the ranch.
In Mora County:
EW reported two male BARROW'S GOLDENEYES on December 20 on ponds on the
east edge of Mora, just west of the Mora River bridge. He saw them again on
December 23.
In Colfax County:
DC saw a THREE-TOED WOODPECKER male between the Lower Tolby Trail and
empty park buildings a quarter mile from US 64 in Cimarron Canyon State Park with
DIPPERS at mile marker 292 on December 12.
He saw the WINTER WREN again at mile post 289 with a SAW-WHET OWL at mile
marker 290 on December 14.
DC counted 28 BALD EAGLES in the Maxwell Refuge/Stubblefield Lake area on
December 10. On Stubblefield on December 4 he found two COMMON LOONS, with a
male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE on December 24. There were three LONG-EARED OWLS on the
east side of A5 in thick woods on the Maxwell Refuge.
He had up to 11 LAPLAND LONGSPURS at the boat ramp parking area at Eagle Nest
Lake on December 13.
In Eagle neat at the feeders behind the house on 4th and Lake he saw all
three ROSY FINCH species with HEPBURN'S. They are also on No Name Trail.
In Union County:
CR on December 14 for the Clayton CBC reported three ROSS'S GEESE, while
most of the 9000 dark geese were CACKLING. Also seen were five VIRGINIA RAILS
near Seneca Creek, a BARN OWL, and a NORTHERN SHRIKE (seen by RV). BL had a
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE on the lake on December 15.
In Bernalillo County:
DP found the male EURASIAN WIGEON on December 13 at a small pond near
Montaņo and Taylor Ranch roads. CL found it there on December 16. On December
19 BH found it at a church pond at the intersection. LLa found it back at
Mariposa Basin Park on December 26m and KSo saw it on December 28.
SD on December 4 had a male PINE WARBLER at the Journalism Bldg. on the
UNM campus in Albuquerque. It was on the west side of the bldg. RV and KSo on
December 19. CR and BN saw it there December 20 near Logan Hall.
At the Crest House feeders on Sandia Crest east of Albuquerque SNC
reported that 60 ROSY FINCHES were banded on December 11, mostly BLACKS (43) with 11
GRAY-CROWNED (including two HEPBURN'S) and six BROWN-CAPPED. SNC saw flocks
of about 100 on December 24, mostly Blacks.
At the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque 318 CACKLING GEESE have
been seen on the pond by the parking lot. DP on December 20 saw four
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS at the back gate of the center.
In Socorro County:
WW and WK had a lone SPRAGUE'S PIPIT west of San Antonio on December 14.
Go east of US 380 to a dirt hwy. A127 that goes north between mile markers 16
and 17. BW reported one pipit a mile past the well with two GRASSHOPPER and
two CASSIN'S SPARROWS among many other sparrow species.
JO had a TREE SPARROW in his Los Lunas yard south of Socorro on December
23.
BL saw 40 PINYON JAYS along US 60 east of Bernardo near mile post 187 on
December 11.
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio CR and BN on December 10 saw
the HARRIS'S SPARROW in front of the visitor center. DS saw the Harris's by
the Quail Pond on December 13; CL and DP saw it December 26. Several
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS have been reported on various parts of the refuge. JSt, JP,
and WW on December 9 had an immature TUNDRA SWAN on the refuge north of the
Flight Deck. CL saw it and a MERLIN on the Farm Loop on December 19. SM on
December 15 had a female COMMON GOLDENEYE on the Marsh Trail. BH on December 17
had a WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE near the Chupadera Deck, an EASTERN PHOEBE nearby,
many sparrows, including SWAMP between it and the Coyote Deck, and a MOORHEN and
VIRGINIA RAIL at the Norton Blind.
In Chaves County:
At Bitter Lake Refuge near Roswell JB saw a AMERICAN BITTERN again on
December 17. JP reported the three WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, three CACKLING GEESE,
and two SWAMP SPARROWS at Unit 7 on December 3.
In Lincoln County:
CR and BN on December 4 saw a pair of DIPPERS in Ruidoso in a park at
Robin Drive and Sudderth near the Chamber of Commerce.
In Sierra County:
BL saw a LONG-TAILED DUCK female on Caballo Lake on December 10. CL had
a COMMON LOON at the Percha Flats on December 16.
CL at Percha Dam State Park on December 16 found WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS.
HUTTON'S VIREO, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, and still a late BULLOCK'S ORIOLE.
He saw the oriole again on December 26.
In Grant County:
EH had uo to 70 PINYON JAYS on the Bear Mountain Lodge at Silver City on
December 22. TM had a WHITE-THROATED SPARROWN in her Silver City yard on
December 13.
DB and EL at Lake Roberts on December 5 found two SWAMP SPARROWS.
In Hidalgo County:
RS on December 24 saw a GREATER YELLOWLEGS on the ponds on I-10 west of
Lordsburg at the Animas exit.
CL found a MERLIN at mile post 31 on county road 1 south of Animas on
December 11.
PDH saw a male and two female RUDDY GROUND-DOVES in Rodeo at the south
edge of town at US 80 and Custie Road on December 2. ND saw a pair at the turn
to Portal off US 80 on the south side of Rodeo on December 11.
In Luna County:
CL on December 10 at the Mountain View Cemetery in Deming saw a PLUMBEOUS
VIREO and a HUTTON'S VIREO with two SNOW GEESE at the Pecan Park pond.
LM advises that the waste water treatment ponds there will be closed for up
to a year with construction.
In Doņa Ana County:
JD reported a possible immature BROAD-WINGED HAWK on Lopez Road in Las
Cruces on December 28.
JPt discovered a first winter GLAUCOUS GULL at the Sunland Park Race
Track pond near Santa Teresa on December 6. MB, NP, and CL on December 9 in the
afternoon found TWO immature GLAUCOUS GULLS on the lake. BN and CR on December
10 had the two Glaucous with two HERRING GULLS and two CALIFORNIA GULLS. WW
and WK had only one Glaucous at the pond on December 14.
BG on December 21 reported a FOX SPARROW at his Las Cruces home.
CL on December 15 at McDowell and Union in Mesilla Park saw an
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and a HUTTON'S VIREO with a SLATE-COLORED JUNCO that was at
3307
McDowell.
MS and JZ have one ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD in their yard near Radium Springs
on December 7. CR and BN saw two there on December 11. Two were still present
as they left for the East on December 18.
At the Old Refuge (Mesilla Valley Bosque Park) south of Mesilla KS on
December 8 had two YELLOWTHROATS and one ROSS'S GOOSE. The goose was seen by BN
and CR on December 11, and the yellowthroats by CL on December 21.
CL had 11 BRONZED COWBIRDS at the NMSU cattle pens December 20.
DG on December 15 and 18 had a COMMON GROUND-DOVE at his north Las Cruces
yard, with a singing ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD male present on the 15th through 18th,
and a RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD from November at least till the 15th. At the Four
Hills Neighborhood Park there was a immature YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER on December
17.
In Otero County:
CL at the Holloman Lakes on December 14 saw seven SNOW GEESE, an AVOCET,
and a HERRING GULL.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the 'no access'
signs are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding.
In Eddy County:
RW along the Pecos Rio near Malaga on December 17 found a GREEN
KINGFISHER. It was searched for by many, but not seen again.
On Brantley Lake on December 12 and 13 JO, SW, and TJH saw a RED-THROATED
LOON and an immature YELLOW-BILLED LOON in the bay near Cheapskate Point.
Both were seen by JO, JP, WW, MB, and NP on December 16 with six COMMON LOONS.
RV reported the Yellow-billed December 18, while JB found it and the
Red-throated the same day, and RN saw both on December 22.
CR and BH had a BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE on the lake on December 23 with
both loons and three SPRAGUES'S PIPITS. JO had the gull with both loons on
December 24. RV, MB, NP, and LLa saw the gull and the Yellow-billed Loon on
December 27. The Red-throated was not found.
JO had a TUNDRA SWAN on Avalon Lake on December 24
At Rattlesnake Springs on December 17 JP, JO, and WW saw a FOX SPARROW,
BROWN THRASHER, EASTERN PHOEBE, MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE, and two YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKERS. At the adjacent Washington Ranch there were three RUSTY BLACKBIRDS.
At the Salt Lakes east of Loving on December 17 SW reported three SNOWY
PLOVERS and 12 DUNLINS.
SW reported an adult BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRD at his home in Carlsbad.
By December 11 there was two Broad-bills, a female BLACK-CHINNED, a male and an
immature female RUFOUS, and a CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRDS at the feeders.
In Lea County:
JO had two FIELD SPARROWS at Maddox Lake west of Hobbs on December 11.
JP reported one there on December 16.
A LONG-TAILED DUCK was on Jal Lake at the Lily Park Sewage Ponds seen by
JP and WW on December 16. RC found it on December 24.

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check, as there may be a last minute change in
plans. On December 29 they bird Embudo Canyon on the west side of the Sandias.
On January 5 they bird Cochiti Lake, on January 12 the Alameda Open Space,
January 19 Sandia Crest, and January 26 the Los Poblanos Open Space.
Southwestern Audubon will explore the Gila River Farm on Saturday, January
21. Contact is David Beatty or Larry Malone at 534-1450.
The Cox banding team will be banding rosy finches at Sandia Crest on
Saturdays January 7, 14, and 22. Sunday dates are January 8, 15, and 28.
