This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for
Thursday December 29, 2005 with reports of BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, EARED
GREBE, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, GOLDEN EAGLE, seasonal and local
reports of interest.
The EARED GREBE continued this week at Lakes Bay near Atlantic City
Dec 24. From the intersection of Rte 9 and Rtes 40/322, go east on
Rtes 40/322 about a mile to Cordova Ave and turn right. Drive a
short distance on Cordova to the bay; look for the bird here (DeLorme
P. 71, G-16). If not there try nearby Genoa Ave. A REDHEAD was
noted with the grebe Dec 23.
The female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE continues in Sandy Hook's Horseshoe
Cove Dec 24. To look for the bird park at the small lot in the
median north of the ranger station (opposite the south maintenance
area), walk north and take the service road on the left (west) out to
the bay. The bird is usually with the COMMON GOLDENEYE flock. A
drake EURASIAN WIGEON, 14 REDHEADS, and an adult male COMMON EIDER
were all found in Spermaceti Cove Dec 24. A subadult male COMMON
EIDER accompanied all three scoter species off C-lot the same day,
where a flyby RAZORBILL was noted as well. A MERLIN is regularly
roosting in the Holly forest and can be viewed atop nearby telephone
poles late in the day. A free, detailed birding map of Sandy Hook is
available at SHBO; check the sightings log there for daily reports.
Manasquan Inlet had 2 RAZORBILLS Dec 26 and both the EURASIAN WIGEON
and REDHEADS were still present at nearby Little Silver Lake in Point
Pleasant the same day. A RED-NECKED GREBE was found at Manasquan
Inlet Dec 23 along with a first-year Iceland Gull at Risden's Beach
in Point Pleasant. Single LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were noted on
the north shore this week at Lake Como and Lake Takanassee.
Two GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were found among thousands of Canada
Geese at Cross Farm Park in Holmdel Dec 26. Look for the birds in
fields near the intersection of Longbridge Rd and Willow Brook Rd
(DeLorme P. 44, E-9). Observers should also be on the lookout for a
CACKLING GOOSE that has been present here, most recently noted Dec 27.
Another CACKLING GOOSE has been present at Marshall's Pond in Toms
River through Dec 22.
Salem County reports Dec 22 included 9 BALD EAGLES, RED-SHOULDERED
HAWK and 2 SANDHILL CRANES at Mannington Marsh, and a light-morph
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK at Fort Elfsborg Road.
The RED-HEADED WOODPECKER remains this week at Garret Mountain along
the upper roadway opposite the horse stables. Please remember not to
disrupt the bird or approach too closely.
The Walnut Valley CBC Dec 18 recorded 88 species including LONG-
TAILED DUCK, 10 BALD EAGLES, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, 3 GOLDEN EAGLES (the
latter two species at Raccoon Ridge), LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, RED-
HEADED WOODPECKER, 6 COMMON RAVENS, 28 PILEATED WOODPECKERS, and PINE
SISKIN.
The Boonton CBC Dec 26 tallied 101 species including GREATER WHITE-
FRONTED GOOSE at Lincoln Park, RUFFED GROUSE in Denville, MERLIN,
LONG-EARED OWL, BROWN THRASHER, and COMMON REDPOLL.
