Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was
recorded on Thursday December 29 at 10:20am.
The province's second KING EIDER -- and first since 1894 -- was found dead
on Monday December 26 at Lake Minnewanka, Banff National Park. This is where
it was originally identified on December 17. Speculation is that the bird
fell victim to a Bald Eagle, as several observers watched an adult Bald at
the site on December 23. The eider, a first year male, attracted many
visitors to Lake Minnewanka and was the subject of several stories on local
and national media outlets.
There were two GYRFALCON reports this week in Calgary. Dave Brown observed a
gray-morph on 68 Street NE just south of Country Hills Blvd Tuesday
afternoon December 27. On the same day Tony Timmons watched a Gyr on 50
Avenue SE near 84 Street. (As many as three Gyrs were seen at this location
on the Calgary CBC December 18.) Again on the same day Tony reported a SNOWY
OWL seen at 114 Avenue SE and 84 Street.
Terry Korolyk found two Snowys between Strathmore and Irricana on December
27. A first-year bird was on Hwy 817 aprx 5-6 km north of Strathmore, and
the second (also first-year) was located along Twp Road 262 just east of
Range Road 261.
The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday January 2.
