SNOWY OWLS were reported across the region....
The Walla Walla Co WA SNOWY OWL continues to be seen. Nearby, along Short
Road, is a grove of trees where up to 10 BARN OWLS are roosting. On both
days it was at the jct of Forest Road and Frog Hollow Road. This is about a
mile north of where it was originally found on 8 Dec, west along Stateline
Road near mile marker 5 between Walla Walla Co WA and Umatilla Co OR. One
note of caution for those going to look at the Barn Owls. The land owner to
the east has suddenly decided that Short Road is his personal property
though it is a county road. He may come on strong, but just kindly reassure
him that you are not trespassing on his land and that he need not worry as
you really respect his private property.
In Lincoln Co WA, Ron & Pat Dexter saw 2 SNOWY OWLS on 31 Dec. One was 0.5
mi SW of the intersection of Morrison and Jannett roads. The second was
along Waukon Road about 2 mi south of US 2, about 0.75 mi north of Wagner
Farm Road. On 1 Jan, Austin found a SNOWY OWL along the Sunset Hwy where it
meets Ziemer Road.
In Kootenai Co ID, Shirley Sturts relayed a sighting of a SNOWY OWL on the
Rathdrum Prairie, north of Post Falls, near Prairie Avenue and Huetter Road.
The bird was seen on 31 Dec. On 2 Jan, Stephen Lindsay couldn't find the
owl, but did see 3 SNOW BUNTINGS.
In Adams Co WA, Craig & Judy Corder found a SNOWY OWL along I-90 between
mileposts 233 & 234 (closer to 234) on 1 Jan. Bob Flores relocated the bird
later that day 0.3 miles east of the intersection of Danekas and Ziemer
Roads, which is between I-90 and Danekas Road. On 2 Jan, Gina Sheridan found
the bird again, spying it from atop the I-90 Tokio exit.
SCRUB JAYS have popped up in unusual places. One is in the Zodiac District
of La Grande, Wallowa Co OR. Originally spied by Mark Penninger on 26 Dec,
Trent Bray forwarded on the directions. First seen on the corner of Aries
and Leo, the bird was last observed near Sunny Hill Park. Sunny Hill Park
can be reached via Gekeler to 12th Street. Go south on 12th toward Bushel
Meadows, and take a left (east) onto Gemini. Cross Aquarius Way and dead end
at a white guard rail. Look in the hawthorns.
The second SCRUB JAY is in Lapwai, Nez Perce Co ID. This is a first for the
county and northern Idaho. First reported by Angela Sondeaa, the bird was
seen by several this past week. Terry Gray provided these directions:
heading south on US 95 from Lewiston, continue through Lapwai past the
football field, and turn right on Parade Avenue. Go straight at the 4-way
stop and continue 2 blocks to A Street. Turn left on A and go past the open
grassy field to the corner. The Nez Perce tribe wildlife building is the
small white house-check the feeders in front.
A male ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD is visiting a feeder in Clarkston Heights,
Clarkston, Asotin Co WA. It is at the home of Jeff and Lollie Schulz, 1730
Valleyview Drive. It has been around for a couple of weeks, last reported on
31 Dec during the Lewiston-Clarkston CBC. Also in Clarkston is a BLUE JAY at
Carroll and Della Flacks, 1216 20th Avenue, and a EURASIAN WIGEON is
persisting near the confluence, often being seen from behind the Costco.
A LONG-TAILED DUCK was seen 31 Dec along O'Sullivan Dam on Potholes
Reservoir in Grant Co WA, according to Doug Schonewald. The dam is along WA
262. WA DeLorme 53, A-6.
More LONG-TAILED DUCKS are on the Clearwater River in Lewiston, Nez Perce Co
ID. Up to 4 have been sighted near the grain terminal. To get there from the
north end of Lewiston, follow US 12 across the Clearwater River and then
stay right past the first traffic light. At the next light, which is 18th
Street, turn right and follow the bypass. Park in the first parking lot.
From the top of the levee you can scan the river in front of the grain
terminals. ID DeLorme 54, A-1.
A BARRED OWL is in Benton Co WA at Two Rivers County Park, according to
Dennis Rockwell. From WA 397, head east on Finley Road for 1.5 mi. Park in
the lot at the SE corner of the lagoon in the park. Walk east on the nature
trail; at the first fork stay left and walk another 100 ft. On 1 Jan, the
owl was seen by Mike & MerryLynn Denny and others, as well as a
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. WA DeLorme 39, C-8.
Some good gulls were reported from the Snake River dams on 1 Jan. Mike and
MerryLynn Denny report an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at Lower Monumental
Dam and an adult MEW GULL below Little Goose Dam. Lower Monumental Dam is on
the Snake River in Franklin Co, WA is about 5 miles south of Kahlotus. WA
DeLorme 54, D-4. Little Goose Dam is on the Snake River in Whitman and
Columbia counties, WA. WA DeLorme 55, D-8.
Good birding.
