This is the Kentucky Bird Line, sponsored by the Kentucky Ornithological
Society. This update is current as of January 3, 2006 at 11:00 AM EDT. The
highlights of this update are:
The Christmas bird Counts have located a few unusual birds over the past
week. A BLUE-HEADED VIREO was seen near the dam of Green river Lake on the
29th. Also noted in the parks camp grounds was a flock of approximately 60
PURPLE FINCH.
An INDIGO BUNTING was counted on the Somerset CBC on the 31st; the location
of which has not been reported yet.
LECONTE’S SPARROW and SEDGE WRENS were counted in the Ballard WMA on the
29th.
A BARN OWL was observed in Calloway County on the 31st. And a SHORT-EARED
OWL was flushed from a field of corn stubble in Logan county.
Open waters has allowed for a good variety of water fowl. GREATER SCAUP were
noted from Green River Lake, Campbellsville City Lake, and Lake Herndon
outside Russellville. Approximately 48 TUNDRA SWANS were seen at the sloughs
of Henderson County on the south side of highway 268. AMERICAN WHITE
PELICANS were seen in Ballard and 254 were observed in Calloway County. And
the CACKLING CANADA GOOSE was seen on 3 counts: Ballard, Green River, and
Calloway. The Ballard count also had 2 ROSS’S GEESE.
