BARROWS GOLDENEYE, CANVASBACKS, GADWALL, HOODED MERGANSER, ZONE-TAILED
HAWK, and an adult female FERRUGINOUS HAWK. Roger observed many sparrows
including a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, 2 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, and a
HARRIS’S SPARROW. He has also seen a HARLAN’S HAWK and over a hundred

Perris.
IMPERIAL COUNTY
Bob Miller and numerous others continue to report SMITH’S, CHESTNUT-
COLLARED, MCCOWAN’S AND LAPLAND LONGSPUR from the fields east of
Calipatria Prison. They have most frequently been seen in the NW quadrant
of the fourth field east of Blair Road between Montgomery and Peterson
Roads. Go east on Peterson Road (by the prison) and park at the NW corner
of the field, then walk out by crossing over the concrete ditch at the
gate on that corner. The best time for observing these species is in the
morning hours between 8:00 and 10:00.
The RUFOUS-BACKED ROBIN continues at the Wister Unit. There have been
multiple sighting where it is typically seen eating palm fruit on the tree
at the entrance to the nature trail. DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER and AMERICAN
REDSTARTS also continue to be seen occasionally in the nature trail area.
There continue to be multiple sightings of waterfowl at the mouth of Salt
Creek at the Salton Sea. Birds of note are COMMON GOLDENEYE, BARROW’S
GOLDENEYE, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, COMMON MERGANSER, WHITE-WINGED SCOTER,
SURF SCOTER, TRICOLORED HERON, immature YELLOW-FOOTED GULL, GLAUCOUS-
WINGED GULL, and LAUGHING GULL. Salt Creek is easily reached by any
vehicle. It is just west of the Imperial County line. Coming from Indio
it is about 6 miles southeast of the first Salton Sea State Park
campground and visitor center. There is a primitive campground in the
area. After crossing the Hwy 111 bridge, turn right immediately at the
first dirt road. Take the right fork and park in the corner of the
campground by the sea. Light is best in the morning.

the power line. James Barr and Beth Boeckel report a PRAIRIE FALCON along
