From the City of Brotherly Love for Friday, August 12th, this is the
Philadelphia Birdline. The birdline is sponsored by several bird
clubs from the Delaware Valley and comes to you from the Academy of
Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. I'm Andy Ednie, substituting for
Armas Hill, away in Brazil.
In Pennsylvania, EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES have been found in
Coatsville, Chester Co. The birds are coming to a feeder on the east
end of town, off Business Rt. 30 (East Lincoln Hwy), turn onto S. 11
Ave and look for the house with feeders on your immediate left. The
EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES were also reported this week at the Turkey
Hill store right on Rt. 30. Although first reported last weekend,
these birds might have been in the area for several weeks.
In Lancaster Co., the Conejohelia Flats are heating up. The best
shorebird this week was a MARBLED GODWIT last Saturday, along with
SANDERLING and 4 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS. Other shorebirds include
BLACK-BELLIED and SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, SPOTTED, SOLITARY, SEMIPALM,
WESTERN, LEAST and PECTORAL SANDPIPERS.
At Heinz NEEC at Tinicum, a COMMON MOORHEN with young was observed.
Shorebirds reported at Tinicum included both YELLOWLEGS, SPOTTED
SANDPIPER, and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER.
A DUNLIN was among the shorebirds from Church Road at Green Lane Reservoir.
A COMMON TERN was seen Monday at Peace Valley in Bucks Co. Lots of
swallows are flying over Lake Galena at Peace Valley right now,
including an occasional CLIFF SWALLOW.
At Lake Nockomixon in Bucks Co. a very early BONAPARTE'S GULL was
seen today, along with 4 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS.
In New Jersey, a MARBLED GODWIT was among the many shorebirds at
Forsythe NWR this week. 43 WHIMBREL were seen there on Sunday, along
with STILT, PECTORAL, and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, and WILSON'S
PHALAROPE. The previously mentioned AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN continues
to be seen at Brigantine, along with occasional BLACK TERNS and LEAST BITTERNS.
Up to 3 MARBLED GODWIT was seen at Stone Harbor Point, with 135
AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, and lots of SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS AND RED
KNOT. There are still at least 4 SANDWICH TERNS at Stone Harbor,
along with a peak 53 ROYAL, 2 CASPIAN TERNS and also GULL-BILLED TERN.
At Cape May, individual CORY'S and GREATER SHEARWATER were reported
at the rips off the point, but numbers of pelagics have greatly
decreased there this week. The most unusual landbird was
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. Migrant warblers include Blue-winged,
Northern Parula, Chestnut-sided, Yellow, Redstart, Prothonotary
Northern Waterthrush, and Kentucky.
Up to 10 UPLAND SANDPIPERS were found this week at the Johnson Sod
Farm off Rt 77, north of Bridgeton in Cumberland Co. Best view was
off Olivet Rd.
A female REDHEAD is currently being seen in Winslow Township, Camden
Co at Donio Park, off the Arial-Williamstown Rd and Cross Key Rd. The
pond is behind the Super G. Also on the pond has been a PIED-BILLED GREBE.
In Delaware, there have been 2-4 SEDGE WRENS at the Ted Harvey
Conservation Area Logan Lane Tract. These birds are being seen in the
marsh, by the parking lot to the bay. When you enter the Logan Tract
off the Kitts Hummock Road, take the first left hand turn and go
straight out to the parking lot. SALT MARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROW was
also seen here on Wednesday, along with SEASIDE, SWAMP and SONG
SPARROW. Today, the SEDGE WRENS were observed carrying nesting material.
Another spot to look for birds at the Logan Tract is the north pond,
which can be reached by taking the first right off the bay parking
lot road. A pair of BLACK TERN and occasionally a GULL-BILLED TERN
was at the North Pond, and good number of shorebirds, including STILT
and PECTORAL SANDPIPER.
A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was reported at Bombay Hook NWR this week, along
with AMERICAN AVOCET, SOLITARY, SPOTTED, STILT and PECTORAL
SANDPIPER. As many as 4 male BLUE GROSBEAKS were counted in the
refuge last Sunday. BOBOLINKS are being seen in the field just east
of the headquarters
As many as 19 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS were seen from shore at the Port
Mahon road.
Dover AFB has not produced any UPLAND SANDPIPERS yet this year, but
there was a singing GRASSHOPPER SPARROW there this week.
UPLAND SANDPIPERS were seen flying over Abbott's Mill Nature Center,
west of Milford on Tuesday, August 9th, but their final destination
was unknown. With cucumbers, squash, and potatoes being harvested,
there are lots of open fields in southern Delaware for interesting shorebirds.
There will be more reports next week. Call in your sightings to me at
302-792-9591. Or email me at ednieap@wittnet.com. Until next week,
good birding.
