Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This
Birdline covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to Thursday,
August 18, 2005.
BEDFORD COUNTY:
A GREAT EGRET and 5 GREEN HERONS were observed in wetlands along Route 220
on August 12 (RB).
Ten GREAT BLUE HERONS have been roosting in a beaver dammed stream near
Altoona through at least August 12 (RB).
BEDFORD/SOMERSET COUNTY:
Allegheny Front Hawk Watch reported counting 1 BLACK VULTURE, 4
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 3 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 9 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS and 2
AMERICAN KESTRELS between August 15 and 17 (DB, CM, TB, RM).
CENTRE COUNTY:
Two GREAT EGRETS, an immature BALD EAGLE, COOPER'S HAWKS, 4 SOLITARY
SANDPIPERS, 5 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 2 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS and 1 CERULEAN
WARBLER were observed at Benner Springs Fish Hatchery on August 11, 12, 15
and 16 (JM).
Birds found along Treaster Kettle Road on August 11 and 15 included
YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO,
BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, WOOD
THRUSH, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, WORM-EATING WARBLER, HOODED WARBLER,
CANADA WARBLER, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, EASTERN TOWHEE and DARK-EYED JUNCO
(JM).
A visit to Millbrook Marsh on August 12 found RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD,
PILEATED WOODPECKER, EASTERN PHOEBE, BARN SWALLOW, 3 CAROLINA WRENS, CEDAR
WAXWINGS, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and SWAMP SPARROW (MH).
Birds seen at Colyer Lake on April 12, 13, 15 and 16 included MUTE SWAN,
MALLARD, GREAT BLUE HERONS, GREEN HERON, KILLDEER, 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 6
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 2 CASPIAN TERNS, 1 FOSTER'S TERN, 1 BELTED
KINGFISHER, DOWNY WOODPECKER, EASTERN PHOEBE, RED-EYED VIREO, AMERICAN CROW,
COMMON RAVEN, BARN SWALLOWS, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, GRAY CATBIRD, FIELD
SPARROW, SONG SPARROW and NORTHERN CARDINAL (MH, JD, JM).
There were TURKEY VULTURE, COOPER'S HAWK, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD,
NORTHERN FLICKER, EASTERN PHOEBE, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, COMMON RAVEN,
BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, AMERICAN ROBIN, GRAY CATBIRD, CEDAR WAXWINGS,
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER,
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, WORM-EATING WARBLER, COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, HOODED
WARBLER, CANADA WARBLER, SCARLET TANAGER, CHIPPING SPARROW, SWAMP SPARROW,
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH at Bear Meadows on August 13
and 15 (JD, JM).
A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH visited a State College yard on August 13 (MH).
A Boalsburg yard attracted 9 RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS, 1 WILLOW FLYCATCHER
and 1 AMERICAN REDSTART on August 14 and 15 (JM).
The beach at Bald Eagle State Park yielded 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 2
unidentified peeps, 1 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, 1 RING-BILLED GULL and 1
CASPIAN TERN on August 16 (DR).
CUMBERLAND COUNTY;
Waggoner's Gap Hawk Watch reported tabulating 1 OSPREY, 4 BALD EAGLES, 1
NORTHERN HARRIER, 4 SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 4 COOPER'S HAWKS, 24 BROAD-WINGED
HAWKS, 5 RED-TAILED HAWK and 9 AMERICAN KESTRELS between August 11 and 17
(DG).
DAUPHIN COUNTY:
A TRUMPETER SWAN with numbered black-and-yellow wing tags and leg band was
seen on the Susquehanna River just south of West Fairview on August 11 and
12 (RK). Other species seen in this area on August 11 and 12 included 2
MUTE SWANS, 2 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 5 GREAT BLUE HERONS, 20 GREAT EGRETS, 8
GREEN HERONS, 8 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS, 1 immature YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT
HERON, 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 15 KILLDEER, 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 2 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 7 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 2 SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPERS, 8 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER and 2 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS (RK).
JUNIATA COUNTY:
Birds seen between Muskrat Springs to Thompsontown on April 8 included
CANADA GEESE, MALLARDS, COMMON MERGANSERS, GREAT BLUE HERONS, GREAT EGRETS,
GREEN HERONS, KILLDEER, SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, LEAST
SANDPIPERS, CHIMNEY SWIFTS, NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS and BARN SWALLOWS
(CK, TP, MO).
On April 10, there were BLACK VULTURES, TURKEY VULTURES, BROAD-WINGED HAWKS,
RED-TAILED HAWKS, EASTERN SCREECH OWLS, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS,
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS, PILEATED WOODPECKERS, EASTERN PEWEES and a possible
WINTER WREN along the trail to Macedonia Falls (CK, TP, RC).
GREAT BLUE HERONS, GREAT EGRETS, CHIMNEY SWIFTS, EASTERN KINGBIRDS, BARN
SWALLOWS and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS were seen at the Junes drive-in river
access area on August 10 (CK, TP, RC).
LANCASTER COUNTY:
Several thousand PURPLE MARTINS have been roosting along Weaverland Road in
Churchtown the last two weeks (DM).
The best daily counts of birds at Conejohela Flats on August 13 and 14 are;
18 WOOD DUCKS, 1 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 53 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, 3 OSPREY, 2
adult and 6 immature BALD EAGLES, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 1 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER,
5 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 166 KILLDEER, 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 7 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, 8 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 1 MARBLED GODWIT, 3 SANDERLINGS, 35
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 2 WESTERN SANDPIPER, 100 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 4
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 1 BONAPARTE'S GULL, 350 RING-BILLED GULLS, 2 CASPIAN
TERNS, 4 COMMON TERNS, 5 FOSTER'S TERNS, 3 BLACK TERNS (BS, DH, JS, CB).
LEBANON COUNTY:
Second Mountain Hawk Watch reports counting 1 OSPREY, 1 BALD EAGLE, 1
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 46 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 5 RED-TAILED HAWK and 5 AMERICAN
KESTRELS from August 11 to 17 (SW, FW, DS, RP, GL).
MCKEAN COUNTY:
Birds seen at Redbridge on August 14 included 5 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 4
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS and 6 LEAST SANDPIPERS (JF).
There were 1 GREEN HERON, 1 OSPREY, 3 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 2 EASTERN SCREECH
OWLS, 1 BARRED OWL and 1 BELTED KINGFISHER at Sugar Bay on August 15 (JF).
SCHUYLKILL/BERKS COUNTIES:
Hawk Mountain Sanctuary reported counting 1 BALD EAGLE, 2 SHARP-SHINNED
HAWKS, 12 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 1 RED-TAILED HAWK and 1 AMERICAN KESTREL
between August 15 and 16 (LG).
