This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for January 9, 2006,
sponsored by the New Mexico Ornithological Society. When phone numbers are given
for private property, please call before going. Highlights are Yellow-billed
and Red-throated Loons, Rosy-Finches, Eurasian Wigeon, Red-necked Grebes,
Barrow's Goldeneye.

In Santa Fe County:
MR and DE on January 7 had 92 SAGE THRASHERS on the Caja del Rio nort
hwest of town.
In Sandoval County:
CL saw an immature RED-NECKED GREBE on Cochiti Lake on December 25 with a
CALIFORNIA GULL. DP saw the grebe on January 7 with a MERLIN, CR and BN
found it on January 8.
DP on January 9 had a WINTER WREN in Frijoles Canyon of the Bandelier NM
near Los Alamos about two miles up the stream from the headquarters at the
13th stream crossing.
BW found a FOX SPARROW and two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS in Peņa Blanca on
January 3.
GF had two white-striped WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS in the Corrales Bosque
on January 1 near barrel 3.7.
In San Miguel County:
GF on December 30 saw two HORNED GREBES and a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER at
Conchas Lake, but reported no loons.
GF on December 30 saw seven FERRUGINOUS HAWKS on the Las Vegas Refuge.
In Colfax County:
DC counted 28 BALD EAGLES in the Maxwell Refuge/Stubblefield Lake area in
December. On Stubblefield he has seen a male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE through January
2. There were up to six LONG-EARED OWLS on the east side of A5 in thick woods
on the Maxwell Refuge. On Lake 11 close to the refuge there was seven TUNDRA
SWANS. MW made an aerial count of 15 swans on the Maxwell Refuge on January
3.
At Sugarite State Park by Raton DC on December 31 had a lingering
MOCKINGBIRD and seven BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES. He had 15 LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS there
and in the Yankee area.
DC saw in Cimarron Canyon State Park a WINTER WREN at mile post 289 on
December 29.
In Eagle Nest at the feeders behind the house on 4th and Lake he saw all
three ROSY FINCH species with HEPBURN'S. They are also on No Name Trail.
In Union County:
CR for the Clayton CBC reported most of the 9000 dark geese present were
CACKLING.
In Quay County:
DC on December 27 at Ute Lake in the headquarters area saw a FOX SPARROW
and three RUSTY BLACKBIRDS. On the lake were six HORNED GREBES.
In Bernalillo County:
WW saw the male EURASIAN WIGEON at Mariposa Basin Park off Taylor Ranch
Road in Albuquerque on January 3, DP found it January 7, BN and CR on January 8
with a WINTER WREN. JP also saw it on the 8th.
DP found the PINE WARBLER again west of the Journalism Bldg. on the UNM
campus on January 5, and JP on January 8.
At the Crest House feeders on Sandia Crest east of Albuquerque SNC
reported that 60 ROSY FINCHES were banded on December 11, mostly BLACKS (43) with 11
GRAY-CROWNED (including two HEPBURN'S) and six BROWN-CAPPED. SNC saw flocks
of about 100 mostly Blacks. JP found them there on January 8.
At the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque many CACKLING GEESE have
been seen on the pond by the parking lot. DP on January 6 saw two
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS at the back gate of the center and one at the front feeder.
GF on
December 29 a TREE SPARROW at the back gate.
CR and AR found a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER in Cedar Crest on December 30.
KC had two PINYON JAYS on trail 56 in Otero Canyon south of Tijeras on
December 26 with a flying GOSHAWK in Tijeras Canyon a mile west of Tijeras.
In Valencia County:
JP and WW had a WHITE-FACED IBIS and a TUNDRA SWAN on January 2 at the
marsh behind the Taco Bell in Belen. LH saw the ibis on January 1, JO saw the
swan on January 5..
In Socorro County:
BW reported one SPARAGUE'S PIPIT with two GRASSHOPPER and two CASSIN'S
SPARROWS among many other sparrow species further north on the road. Go east on US
380 from San Antonio to dirt hwy. A127 that goes north between mile markers 16
and 17. JP and WW had three pipits in this area on January 2 near a cattle
guard about 2.6 miles north of 380. SW found one on another hard to drive road
further east on January 7.
JO had a TREE SPARROW and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW in his Luis Lopez yard
south of Socorro on January 4, and a HOUSE WREN has been present through
January 3. The Tree Sparrow was still seen on January 5.
In a field just north of the JO home east of Luis Lopez CR and PS found
the BAR-HEADED GOOSE escape on January 7, which has left the refuge with a
small flock of Canadas.
BZ on January 9 reported 75 CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS at a tank on the
entrance road into Water Canyon west of Socorro.
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio an immature HARRIS'S SPARROW
was seen by SM on January 7 in the visitor center area at the Quail Pond; GF
found it there January 8. Several WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS have been reported
on various parts of the refuge. CR and PS saw a MERLIN on the Farm Loop on
January 7. BH on December 17 had a WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE near the Chupadera Deck,
an EASTERN PHOEBE nearby, many sparrows, including SWAMP, between it and the
Coyote Deck. JZ and MS on December 31 saw a flock of ten BUSHTITS on the
refuge. GF on January 8 had a PYRRHULOXIA at the Quail Pond, SW had a PHAINOPEPLA
on January 7, when SM saw a GREAT EGRET and a VERMILION FLYCATCHER, with a
HOUSE WREN and INCA DOVE on January 8. BZ had two blue morph ROSS'S GEESE at
the entrance road ponds on January 9.
ByH on January 1 had a PINE WARBLER (photo) on the NMT campus at Turtle
Bay Park behind the Macey Bldg.
In Catron County:
JH had a PYGMY OWL on the porch of her ranch east of Datil on the evening
of December 30.
In Chaves County:
CL on January 6 had a KRIDER'S HAWK at the Bottomless Lakes State Park
near Roswell and a SNOW GOOSE and 15 HOODED MERGANSERS on Van Lake near Dexter.
In Sierra County:
BZ on January 8 with his tour found a RED-NECKED GREBE at a marina on
Elephant Butte Lake at the dam by a restaurant. Park in the circular parking lot
overlooking the boats. Also seen was an OSPREY on a boat mast. JZ and MS
saw the grebe on January 9.
On January 9 BZ reported a high count of 40 SAGE THRASHERS and 75
MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS on the road into the Rock Canyon Marina at the lake.
DH had a GLAUCOUS GULL at the north end of Caballo Lake on December 31 at
the point where the lake is now part of the river.
CL at Percha Dam State Park saw the late BULLOCK'S ORIOLE again on
December 31 with a probable zaboria (red) FOX SPARROW. PLUMBEOUS VIREO, HUTTON'S
VIREO, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, EASTERN PHOEBE, 26 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, and two
WOOD DUCKS at the Rio Grande bridge south of the park. On January 8 BZ found a
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, six of the bluebirds, and the adult sapsucker.
In Grant County:
EL counted 142 PINYON JAYS near Lake Roberts on December 21.
DG saw three GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS north of Hachita December 26.
In Hidalgo County:
CB had two WHITE-TAILED KITES ten miles south of Hachita on January 4 on NM
81 by mile marker 35.
NMC reminds that County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A
(Gray) Ranch. One most not step off of the road or other birders will suffer loss
of access.
On December 29 JB had a slate-colored FOX SPARROW in Clanton Canyon at
the riparian area with four HUTTON'S VIREOS in the main campground.
In Luna County:
JB on December 29 in dense grass along Hermanas Grade Road southwest of
Deming saw a BAIRD'S SPARROW.
LM advises that the waste water treatment ponds there will be closed for up
to a year with construction.
In Doņa Ana County:
At the Sunland Park Race Track pond near Santa Teresa BZ reports that the
immature GLACOUS GULL was still present on January 5 best seen on the pond at
dusk.
DG and CL on January 2 had 17 GREAT EGRETS at Swan Pond north of Radium
Springs.
CL on December 15 at McDowell and Union in Mesilla Park saw a HUTTON'S
VIREO with a SLATE-COLORED JUNCO that was at 3307 McDowell. On January 1 he saw
the junco and five ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS.
BZ had a PLUMBEOUS VIREO at McDoweel and Conway on January 6. There was a
PEREGRINE FALCON for BZ south of Old Mesilla on Hwy. 28.
At Aguirre Springs east of the Organs BZ found a HUTTON'S VIREO in the
campground on January 6.
JZ and MS found the two ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS were still at their feeder
near Radium Springs on their return from the East January 8.
At the Old Refuge (Mesilla Valley Bosque Park) south of Mesilla On
January 2 CL saw a HARLAN'S HAWK. Across the Rio on a ditch north of NM 337 on Snow
Road he found a probable DUSKY FLYCATCHER.
CL had 11 BRONZED COWBIRDS at the NMSU cattle pens December 20.
DG on December 15 to 29 had a COMMON GROUND-DOVE at his north Las Cruces
yard, with a singing ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD male present on the 15th through 27thh.
In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the 'no access'
signs are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding.
In Eddy County:
On Brantley Lake a RED-THROATED LOON and an immature YELLOW-BILLED LOON
have been in the bay near Cheapskate Point. AAM saw both on December 24. JC
had the Yellow-billed near the dam on January 2 with up to seven COMMON LOONS
present on the lake. There were over 50 COMMON GOLDENEYES seen with one
SPRAGUE'S PIPIT on January 1 near the west boat ramp.
CR and BH had a BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE on the lake on December 23 with
three SPRAGUES'S PIPITS. JO had the gull on December 24. RV, MB, NP, and LLa
saw the gull and the Yellow-billed Loon on December 27. JP on January 6
reported a GLAUCOUS GULL on January 6 with the Red-throated Loon, but could not find
the Yellow-billed. JNM and WW saw the latter on January 5. The Glaucous was
seen by JP briefly on January 8.
JO had a TUNDRA SWAN on Avalon Lake on December 24. It was seen there by
WW on January 5 and MW from a plane the same day. CL found it January 7 and
8 with 14 GREAT EGRETS.
CL on January 8 had a kettle of eight HARRIS'S HAWKS over the Pecos Rio
at Malaga.
At Rattlesnake Springs on January 6 JP reported a red FOX SPARROW, BROWN
THRASHER, and SWAMP SPARROW with a possible DUSKY FLYCATCHER. On January 7 CL
found four thrashers, two EASTERN PHOEBES, three Swamp sparrows, two MOUNTAIN
CHICKADEES, and an unidentified empidonax (a possible Western type). He saw
the Fox Sparrow there on January 8.
At the adjacent Washington Ranch there were three RUSTY BLACKBIRDS seen by JP
on January 6, JNM and WW on January 5, and CL on January 7 with and Eastern
Phoebe, two SLATE-COLORED JUNCOS, and two BROWN CREEPERS.
In Lea County:
A LONG-TAILED DUCK was on Jal Lake at the Lily Park Sewage Ponds seen by
JP and WW on December 16. RC found it on December 24.
RC reports that grass fires have burned over Maddox Lake.
In Texas:
JZ sent photos of the LEAST GREBE that was on the Crossroads Pond in El
Paso on January 2. BZ reports it was there still on January 6, a mile from
Nuevo Mejico.

Field Trips:
Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check, as there may be a last minute change in
plans. On January 12 they bird the Alameda Open Space, January 19 Sandia Crest,
and January 26 the Los Poblanos Open Space on Montaņo.
Southwestern Audubon will explore the Gila River Farm on Saturday, January
21. Contact is David Beatty or Larry Malone at 534-1450.
The Cox banding team will be banding rosy finches at Sandia Crest on
Saturdays 14 and 22. Sunday dates are 15 and 28.
On Saturday, January 21, Sangre de Cristo Audubon will go to Sandia Crest for
the rosies. Call Linda Mowbray at 989-8925.
The same day Central Audubon will also have a trip to the Crest working their
way up for highlands species. Contact is Celestyn Brozek at 925-8611.
The Randall Davey Audubon Center in Santa Fe has nature walks on the grounds
