This is the Kansas Rare Bird Alert, an internet only hotline which is posted
intermittently on those occasions when really good birds show up in Kansas. Quite
a number of birds meeting that criteria have been seen in the past three days.
A ROSEATE SPOONBILL was found on Wednesday, August 17, at Tuttle Creek Reservoir
near Manhattan. The bird was found near the Fancy Creek Marina and was seen by
several observers later in the day. This site is on the west side of the
Reservoir. Several images of the bird have been posted to the KOS website at
www.ksbirds.org. A rural residence on the east side of the reservoir hosted a
WHITE-WINGED DOVE on August 17.
A SABINE'S GULL in adult breeding plumage has been present at Clinton Reservoir near
Lawrence since Monday, August 15, and was still present the afternoon of the 17th.
All sightings have been from the Bloomington Beach area on the west side of the
reservoir. Most sightings of this species in Kansas are of immature birds, so this
is a unique sighting. Several CASPIAN TERNS are also in this area with other gull
and tern species.
A WHITE IBIS in immature plumage was observed on Sunday August 14. on the wildlife
observation loop at the Big Salt Marsh portion of the Quivira NWR. There have
been no subsequent reports but the bird may well still be present. Many shorebirds
and waders are present at Quivira, including noteworthy species such as LONG-BILLED
CURLEW, RUDDY TURNSTONE and BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER.
Hummingbird feeders in Larned and Garden City have been turning up frequent
sightings of western species in the past few weeks, including RUFOUS, BROAD-TAILED,
BLACK-CHINNED and CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRDS. Sightings of RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD
seem to be higher than usual in eastern and central Kansas this year.
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS are back at the Colwich Sod Farms near Wichita, where up to
50 have been seen recently.
Migrant passerines are beginning to be reported from various areas of the state,
including NORTHERN PARULA, and BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, both seen at Wichita in
the past few days. A BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK was seen at at feeder in Garden City.
If any of these birds continue to be seen an update will eventually be made by this
compiler. Those wanting up to date info in much more detail are encouraged to visit
the KOS website at www.ksbirds.org and click on the link for the KSBIRD listserv
archives, where more information is readily available on all of the above sightings
and subsequent information which is likely to be posted.
May the four winds bring you good birds.
