On the Upper Texas Coast an unusual first winter gull, presumed to be a
YELLOW-LEGGED GULL* (Larus chachinnans) is being seen on East Beach in Galveston.
The bird seems to prefer the Apfel Park side of the beach. A BLACK-LEGGED
KITTIWAKE (Rissa tridactyla) was seen off of the jetty at Surfside on Jan.14.

In the Coastal Bend area a banded GREATER FLAMINGO* (Phoenicopterus ruber) was
last reported on Poverty Reef south of Bludworth Island between Carlos Bay and
the Inter-coastal Waterway on Thursday, Jan. 12. This area is only accessible by
boat. The Whooping Crane tour boats pass this area.

In South Central Texas a TROPICAL PARULA (Parula pitiayumi) is still present in
San Antonio on Ave. A in Brackenridge Park. To reach Ave. A take the Mulberry
Ave. exit off of Hwy 281. Go east past the driving range on the left. You will
pass over the San Antonio River. Ave. A is immediately to the right after
crossing the river. (The river is not much more than a creek here). The bird has
been seen mostly towards the end of the street and

In the Rio Grande Valley two DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER* (Myiarchus tuberculifer)
are being seen again this year in the same location as last winter, east of Los
Indios near Cannon Road. To reach this area take Military Highway west from Los
Indios. Look for the rest stop with the old cannon. Go .6 miles west of this rest
stop on Military and turn north on the dike road. Go .6 miles on this road to the
curve. Look for a old piece of carpeting. One bird is being seen in this area.
The second bird is being seen about a half mile further down the road. The
GRAY-CROWNED YELLOWTHROAT* (Geothlypis poliocephalus) is being seen again at
Sabal Palms Audubon Center in Brownsville. Ask the staff for directions. A RUDDY
GROUND DOVE* (Columbina talpocate) was reported this past week at Santa Ana NWR
near Pintail Lake.

In North East Texas a adult LITTLE GULL* (Larus minitus) was found at Wright
Patman Lake near Texarkana today. The bird was seen from the parking lot of the
Lake Headquarters Building at the south end of the dam.

In North Central Texas the adult MEW GULL* (Larus canus) was seen again at Lake
Worth, northwest of Fort Worth on Jan. 7.The bird was seen off of Heron Drive
across from “The Castle” in with a large group of other gulls. The bird was not
seen this past weekend despite extensive searching.

In East Central Texas a RUFOUS-BACKED ROBIN* (Turdas rufopalliatus) was observed
and photographed at a private residence in Bastrop County, east of Austin on Jan.
11. The bird was in with a flock of American Robins. Watch those Robin flocks!

In the Panhandle an adult GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL* (Larus marinus) was seen again
at Lake Meridith East of Amarillo on Jan. 11 from the Harbor Bay area. The bird
seems to be easiest to see in the evening.

In El Paso a far out range LEAST GREBE (Tachybaptus dominicus) has been at
Crossroad Pond.
