Reports summarized this week are from San Bernardino, Riverside, and
Imperial Counties.
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY
Thomas Miko reported an AMERICAN DIPPER in Icehouse Canyon about 200 yards
up trail from the parking lot. 3 MOUNTAIN QUAIL were about 100 yards up
the trail from the parking lot. Other expected mountain birds were seen in
the same general area.
RIVERSIDE COUNTY
>From the Whitewater River delta, Chet McGaugh reported a WOOD STORK. He
reported numerous birds at the river mouth, mostly gulls, including YELLOW
FOOTED GULL, terns, herons, and pelicans. A RUDDY TURNSTONE was on the
east side of the delta.
IMPERIAL COUNTY
Sandy Koonce reported PERAGRINE FALCON, 200+ LAUGHING GULLS, and 34 WOOD
STORK soaring over the intersection of Garst and Red Hill heading north.

In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains, where
it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in Riverside
in July, may be common there in December.
