We have a new accessory website that has recent photos of rarities and maps
of some birding spots in the County, including a map of Huntington Central
Park showing the "local" names for birding areas at:

Note: We may supply for many sightings (AT THE END OF THIS REPORT) links for
maps of those areas and aerial photos. Many of these are general maps. If
we have specific information from GPS readings, we will alert you to the
fact. After you go to the link, go to the BOTTOM of the form and choose
aerial photo (and adjust zoom factor) or the map (where eventually you will
adjust the zoom factor).

Ed Stonick's reports that " In case word hasn't completely gone out, the
parking lot and boardwalk at Bolsa Chica have reopened. ... You can walk to
the tide gates along the trail next to PCH. The area beyond the boardwalk
is still closed."

Observers: Sonny Mencher, Lori Whalen, Ed Stonick, Al Borodayko, Jim Pike,
Gerco Hoogeweg, Steve Smith, Felicia Zapolingo (?), Bill Wow (?), Ron
Holland, Dick and Pat Cabe.

Today at Mile Square Park the HARRIS SPARROW was found in the Butterfly and
Hummingbird garden area of the nature center. Also reported from this area
the last week has been a GRAY FLYCATCHER.

Today on the east side of Huntington Central Park the continuing SUMMER
TANAGER, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW (near the Gothard parking area) were
found, as well as a BROWN CREEPER by the bandstand by the lake.

Yesterday, Tuesday, the DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER was again seen along the
Mesa Verde Golf Course in Costa Mesa. The observer felt that " late
afternoon when the sun is only hitting the west side of the eucalyptus row
is probably a good time to look. It was again about 100 yards south of the
end of Gisler Street."

On Monday at Bolsa Chica Preserve the REDDISH EGRET was south of the
pedestrian bridge and a GREATER SCAUP male was reported from the end of the
bridge. Another REDDISH EGRET was at the Hamilton Bridge Crossing of the
Santa Ana River. On the 22nd a possible STILT SANDPIPER was reported from
Bolsa Chica; more information on this unusual winter record is desired.

Last Sunday an AMERICAN BITTERN was at the Talbert Nature Reserve's pond in
Costa Mesa, and there was a flyover on the 22nd at Bolsa Chica of the same
species.

Last Saturday at Oso Viejo Community Park a SUMMER TANAGER and a WESTERN
FLYCATCHER wee along Arbolitos Road at the upper entrance, and a GRAY
FLYCATCHER was in the stretch of lawn at the midpoint of the park.

Last Saturday on private property (Aliso Creek Nature Trail) a RED-NAPED
SAPSUCKER was seen on the east end of the trail.

Apparently the male BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRD was a no show last Saturday,
but was reported on Sunday after the observer waited 2 hours. The
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER and a WESTERN FLYCATCHER type were found on Saturday
at the spot. Directions are
Take the 405 south to La Paz. Go north and take the second left at
Chrisanta. Follow the S-curve and park at the lower stretch of the road
which has trees on both sides. Go around the gate on the left side of
Chrisanta, and head toward the tracks. A Chestnut-sided Warbler was within
25 yards in the willows to the left. The slope below the homes on the right
consists of bare ground and some acacia and oleander shrubs. In another 25
yards, just before
reaching the channelized creek, the slope bends to the right. It was at this
corner that the BBHU was ruling over any other hummers that came near 'his'
upslope tree tobacco.

The female BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRD was seen last Saturday. Directions:

>From I-5, take Oso Pkwy east to Marguerite Pkwy. Turn left, and then, very
soon, turn left on Via Angelina. Park at the end of Via Angelina (where Via
Casitas shoots off to the right). There is a short stretch of chainlinked
fence that 'connects' Via Angelina to a rip-rapped creek. The bird seems
to spend all of its time going back and forth from Brazilian peppers along
the creek at one end of the fence to the red-flowering euc near Via
Angelina at the other end of the fence.
