Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for January 26th,
2006. This report covers the period from January 21st to January 26th, and
will be updated again on February 2nd.
The MEW GULL discovered on the 6th at Watchemoket Cove is still being seen.
The bird has been seen most reliably on both sides of Watchemoket Cove at low
tide, feeding or resting with RING-BILLED GULLS. Park in the lot at the sewer
pumping station on Veterans Memorial Parkway to check the inner and outer
coves. The bird is sometimes seen across the Providence River by scoping from the
East Bay bike path. The origin of this gull is being discussed and it appears
that many features of the gull are inconsistent with American Mew Gull or
European Common/Mew Gull, Larus c. canus. There is a good possibility that this
gull is Larus c. kamtschatschensis, "Kamchatka" Gull, the Eastern Siberian
race of Common Gull. Photographs can be seen here:

Directions: Watchemoket Cove is on Veterans Memorial Parkway in East
Providence. From Route 195 east, take Exit 4 and bear right onto Veterans Memorial
Parkway. The cove is approximately 1 1/2 miles from the highway. To reach the
East Bay bike path, park in the parking lot up the hill from Watchemoket Cove
and walk down the path (going south) to the open river. Scope across the river
and look for the gulls feeding in the water below.
Other gulls seen this week at Watchemoket Cove include: 5 BLACK-HEADED GULL,
11 BONAPARTE'S GULL and 2 ICELAND GULL. An adult
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was found on the river, and continuing south along
the bike path, 1 EURASIAN WIGEON was discovered with AMERICAN WIGEON past the
Squantum Club.
On the 24th, a GLAUCOUS GULL was reported from the East Providence Reservoir.
At Sachuest Point in Middletown on the 21st, 1 THICK-BILLED MURRE and 1
RED-NECKED GREBE. On the 22nd, a male and female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE were spotted.
Around the marsh on the road to Third Beach, a SHORT-EARED OWL was seen on the
22nd. Also on the 22nd, 1 SNOW GOOSE was at Third Beach restoration area.
A FORSTER'S TERN was seen near Sandy Point in Portsmouth on the 25th.
On the 24th at Watch Hill Light in Westerly, 1 LONG-TAILED DUCK was observed,
and on the 26th, 14 SNOW BUNTING were on the lawn there.
>From the southern end of Moonstone Beach Road in South Kingstown, 1
SHORT-EARED OWL was seen on the 22nd.
At Save The Bay, Fields Point in Providence on the 23rd, 26 SNOW BUNTING.
At Swan Point Cemetery on the 21st, 2 EASTERN SCREECH OWLS were reported.
Several RUSTY BLACKBIRDS have been coming to bird seed behind the main
building at the Cumberland Monastery along Route 114 in Cumberland.
On the 23rd, 2 PINE SISKINS were seen at a feeder in North Smithfield, and a
PINE SISKIN and 1 COMMON REDPOLL have been visiting a feeder in Burrillville
several times during the past week.

Kettle Hole Visitor's center in Charlestown.
