There have been no further reports on a small Calidrid Sandpiper that may have been
a juvenile LITTLE STINT that was seen just east of Irricana on Friday, August 12.
The bird was seen between 2:00-2:30 pm by Terry Korolyk amongst approximately 300
other small Calidrids at the slough on the south side of Twp Rd 273
approximately 1/2 km east of Hwy 9. Several observers visited the location on
Saturday, August 13 but there were no reports of this bird on August 13.
Shorebirds reported east of Calgary on Monday, August 15 by Terry Korolyk included
two and possibly as many as four WESTERN SANDPIPERS, all juveniles.
One juvenile was at the slough across from the west side of the Heatherglen Golf
Course, located east of Calgary on Glenmore Trail, while one and possibly three
more birds were at the Twp Rd 273 slough just east of Irricana. Some large flocks
of shorebirds have been at sloughs in the general Calgary area recently. On
Saturday, August 13, Terry Korolyk observed as many as 1500 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES,
600 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and 350 MARBLED GODWITS at
Clear Lake on Twp Rd 142, 15 kms east of Stavely. At the Cattleland Feedlots Slough
on August 15, Terry observed 300 STILT SANDPIPERS. The slough is in the
N/E corner of the Hwys 817-564 junction north of Strathmore.
Migrating songbirds reported recently included an immature BLACKPOLL WARBLER in the
Irricana Sloughs on August 15. Terry Korolyk saw that bird in with an OVENBIRD,
TENNESSEE WARBLER and a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH 2 kms north of Twp Rd 270 on Rge Rd
252. Terry reported the same day at least
21 PURPLE MARTINS were at the Chestermere Lake colony in the N/W corner of the
T-junction, south of the S/E corner of the Dam. Terry Korolyk also reported
that the 2 adult TRUMPETER SWANS that were at the slough on the east side of Hwy 22,
just south of Plummers Rd junction through the summer were still there as
of Sunday, August 14.
