SNOWY OWLS are still the birds of the week....
Kootenai Co ID. The SNOWY OWL on the Rathdrum Prairie in Kootenai Co ID.
Look for it on the west side of Greenferry Road, a short distance north of
Prairie Road near Gallop Lane.
Latah Co ID. I saw two SNOWY OWLS 24 Jan along Berger Road NE of Genesee.
Several birders have spied one of them through 28 Jan. To get there from US
95, turn east onto the Old US 95 at milepost 336.3 (about 7.5 miles south of
Moscow). Follow Old US 95 about 2.5 miles until it veers right (south) onto
the Genesee-Troy Road. Follow the GT Road south about 0.25 miles and turn
left (east) onto Eikum Road. Follow Eikum about 1.5 miles. Here, Danielson
Road goes off to the right, Eikum makes a zig, and Danielson goes off to the
left. Immediately Eikum becomes Berger. Go another mile. Just before Berger
makes a sharp right turn south, there's a big basin on the north side of the
road. Look for the birds. You'll probably need a scope. ID DeLorme 58, C-1.
Lewis Co ID. Charles Swift found a SNOWY OWL on 27 Jan along US 95 near
Craigmont. The bird was just north of the business interchange for
Craigmont.
Lincoln / Spokane Co WA. On 24 Jan, Jim Christensen and Ron Dexter found 7
SNOWY OWLS, most in Lincoln Co near Reardan. Birds were seen 0.25 mile south
of US 2 along Carstens Road on the county line; Wagner Farm Road between
Waukon and Carstens; Ditner? Road 1 mile north of Sunset Hwy and 1.5 mile
west of Mondovi Road; north of Sunset Hwy between Jannett and Ziemer roads;
east of Ziemer Road between US 2 and Morrison Road; along Omans Road south
of Morrison Road and behind the Omans grain elevators. Many others reported
seeing some of these birds through the 29th.
On 26 Jan Gina Sheridan found a GYRFALCON between Stroup and Carstens roads
in Spokane Co WA. This is south of US 2 along the county line. WA DeLorme
88, CD-2.
On 24 Jan Lisa Hardy found 2 LONG-TAILED DUCKS on Lake Coeur d'Alene,
Kootenai Co ID. She saw the birds from the beach at North Idaho College in
Coeur To get there from the intersection of US 95 and Northwest Blvd on the
south end of CdA, take Northwest Blvd southeast about 0.5 mile and turn
right onto Lincoln Way. Go one block and turn right onto River Avenue.
Follow River Avenue about 0.25 miles to Rosenberry Drive which runs along
the top of the dike along the river. See A Birders' Guide to Idaho p 50 and
ID DeLorme 60, B-1.
A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was found 27 Jan in Walla Walla Co WA by Mike and
MerryLynn Denny. They found the bird west of Touchet, at the east end of
Byrnes Road 0.5 mile off of US 12. WA DeLorme 40, D-3.
Two PACIFIC LOONS were seen by Scott Downes on 29 Jan near Vantage, Kittitas
Co WA. The birds were near the I-90 bridge.
A EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE was seen 29 Jan in Davenport, Lincoln Co WA by Gina
Sheridan. The bird was near the junction of Main and 13th Avenue.
