This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, August 18. Please
report sightings to Jon Fisher at 818-544-5009 or e-mail to

The highlight of this past week was an adult CURLEW SANDPIPER present in
Long Beach on August 13 and 14. The bird was seen just below the Del Amo
crossing of the LA River. No sightings have been reported since August 14.
A juvenile SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER was also seen in this area.

SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS were also reported from Ventura County. One was at
the Santa Clara River Estuary on August 15 and another was on the Oxnard
Plain in the channel that crosses under Laguna Road just west of Wood Road.
The latter location also produced a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER.

Five more BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were reported from the Santa Clara River
Estuary in Ventura on August 15. The BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS continued and up to
four SOLITARY SANDPIPERS were reported from the estuary on August 18. These
birds were all seen upstream from the bridge.

Two BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were seen along the LA River on August 14 through 18.
These birds occur near any of several access points along the river.
Check the Willow, Wardlow and Del Amo street crossings as all have been good
for shorebirds the past few weeks. Rather unusual was a DUNLIN seen on
August 18 just below the Del Amo crossing.

The final report of BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was one at Malibu Lagoon on August 13
near the first wooden bridge.

Still present at Point Dume near Malibu on August 13 was a WHITE-WINGED
DOVE. This bird was last seen near the wooden observation deck at the
point. A PIGEON GUILLEMOT was also seen from the point on August 13.

This report is sponsored by the Los Angeles Audubon Society.
