This is the Michigan Statewide Bird Report for Thursday, February 16th,
2006. This month is sponsored by Sarett Nature Center, near Benton Harbor,
Michigan www.sarett.com .
In LIVINGSTON COUNTY, in Brighton on February 15th, Chris and Jean Hensick
observed a male Bullock's Oriole at their feeders in Genoa Twp., Livingston
County. The bird was present for about 20 minutes, but despite constant
searching/watching the rest of the day, it never returned to their feeders.
It seems likely that the bird is still in the area, perhaps it has another
feeder that it frequents more faithfully. In fact, the Hensick's just
restocked their feeders on Sunday, after having them empty for some time. At
this point, it is not clear where one should look for the bird. Until a
pattern emerges, this could be a very difficult bird to relocate. Chris will
be looking in his area of the subdivision and will alert other homeowners
with feeders to keep an eye out for the oriole. It may be worth waiting to
see if anyone reports it again - Chris has agreed to get the word out
quickly if it reappears.
In the meantime, if birders want to check their feeders, you are welcome to
stop by anytime after 9:00 am (please respect this request and not arrive
earlier).
>From I-96, take Exit 145 (Grand River) and head north for about a 1/2 mile
to Hacker Road. Turn right onto Hacker and proceed 2 miles to McClements
Road. Turn left on McClements and go to the 8th house on the right (7589
McClements Road). You may park in the driveway or along the road.
Once there, the best direction, so as not to spook the birds, is to walk
around the right (East) end of the house; from the back corner you have a
good view of the feeders."
(ADAM BYRNE contributed this information).
