You have reached the Cape May Birding Hotline, a service of New Jersey
Audubon Society’s Cape May Bird Observatory. This week’s message was
prepared on Friday February 17. The roster this week includes
sightings of DICKCISSEL, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, SNOW BUNTING, GOLDEN
EAGLE, SHORT-EARED OWL, AMERICAN BITTERN, COMMON MERGANSER, AMERICAN
TREE SPARROW, ICELAND GULL, REDHEAD
Starting in Cape May this week, the DICKCISSEL has not been seen from
the Northwood Center since 2/11 and since 2/12 when it was observed
at a near by feeder.
On 2/11 an AMERICAN BITTERN was seen from the “Meadows.” An AMERICAN
TREE SPARROW was found on 2/15 behind the Northwood Center but has
not been seen since. Today 2/17 a first year ICELAND GULL was
spotted along Second Ave in Cape May. Also in Cape May today, the
female REDHEAD was re-found on Lilly Lake.
Moving off of the island a COMMON MERGANSER was found on 2/13 in Cape
May Beach along Champlain Road. The DICKCISSEL that was previously
at a feeder in the Villas has returned as of 2/12 but not reported
after 2/14.
Farther up the Bayshore in Cumberland County, a GOLDEN EAGLE was
spotted in the Dividing Creek area on 2/13. Also on 2/13 were 2
LAPLAND LONGSPUR and 17 SNOW BUNTINGS on Baypoint Road. At Husted
Landing were 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS
CMBO’s bookstore hours are as follows: Northwood Center in Cape May
Point, as promised, has returned to a standard routine of being open
Thursday-Monday 9-4:30. The Center for Research and Education on
Route 47 in Goshen is open 7 days a week, 9-4:30. Both centers will
be closed on Monday Feb 27th and Tuesday Feb 28th for inventory.
