This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for February 19, 2006,
sponsored by the New Mexico Ornithological Society. When phone numbers are
given for private property, please call before going. Highlights are Eurasian
Wigeon, Harris's Sparrow, Glaucous, Mew, and Thayer's Gulls, Varied Thrush.
There have been almost no reports of Cassin's Finches, Red Crossbills,
Evening Grosbeaks, Clark's Nutcrackers, and pine Grosbeaks.

In San Juan County:
DP had a PEREGRINE FALCON at Chaco Canyon on February 14 near the Pueblo
Bonito ruins.

In Colfax County:
DC had in the salt cedars on the west side of Laguna Madre on February 7
three LONG-EARED OWLS.
On adjacent Stubblefield Lake he found the male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE on
February 9; He counted 16 BALD EAGLES there on February 2, three of them were
adults. There have been 15 TUNDRA SWANS on lake 12 of the nearby Maxwell
Refuge.
At the Cimarron Canyon State Park east of Eagle Nest DC found two
WILSON'S SNIPE at mile marker 292 on US 64 On February 9. He had one DIPPER at
marker 289, SIX at 292, and two more at the Palisade Sill parking area.

In Cibola County:
On Februart 17 CJG had a NORTHERN SHRIKE along NM 53 at mile marker 62
(a mile west of the El Malpais Info Center) on private lane in the natl.
monument.
On February 18 on ice-free Bluewater Lake there were eight WHITE
PELICANS on the west side and a CURVE-BILLED THRASHER at the Coyote Golf Course in
Grants by the clubhouse.
CJG in the Zuni Mts. has had two ACORN WOODPECKERS in the upper part of
Ojo Bonito Canyon the week of February 12. He has seen NUTCRACKERS going
south on county road 42 off of NM 53 from the Ice Caves. Also RED CROSSBILLS in
a remote rugged Braided Cave part of the El Malpais NM.
On February 17 he had two COLLARED DOVES at his home at the El Morro
Ranches on NM 50.

In Bernalillo County:
RV and NC had a red FOX SPARROW at the front green feeder at the Rio
Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque on February 18.
BH on February 11 found an adult MEW GULL at a sandbar in the Rio Grande
just north of the Alameda Ave. bridge in Albuquerque. Park at the northwest
side of the bridge. JP saw it on February 17 around 4 btywalking the east
side of the Rio. LLa saw it on February 18 with a immature CALIFORNIA GULL.
JP and HS found it on February 18. Most sightings have been around 4:00,
JZ and MS saw the male EURASIAN WIGEON at Mariposa Basin Park off Taylor
Ranch Ranch Road in Albuquerque on February 4.
On February 4 while hiking on the trail to the Kiwanis Meadow on Sandia
Crest east of Albuquerque JJ again saw a male THREE-TOED wOODPECKER near the
gate at the lower parking area. RV saw a BAND-TAILED PIGEON in the lower lot
on February 11.
DP found a WINTER WREN along the Cedro Creek Nature Trail south of
Tijeras on February 6 just upstream fro the second crossing by a large boulder.
At the Crest House feeders on Sandia Crest SNC say flocks of ROSY
FINCHES, mostly BLACKS, are present. The banding team on February 5 have banded a
total so far this winter of 231, including 178 Blacks, 28 BROWN-CAPPED and 25
GRAY-CROWNED. Three of the Hepbun's race have been banded.
At the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque DP on February 9 saw
three TREE SPARROWS at the back entrance with a tan stripe WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW in the center.
DH found a PEREGRINE FALCON on the Bank of the West at San Mateo and
Central on February 7.

In Torrance County:
WW on February 8 on the east side of the Manzano Mts. at Capilla Peak
(Trail 170) saw 15 RED CROSSBILLS.

In DeBaca County:
JP and LL on February 17 at Sumner Lake saw three HORNED GREBES and a
first year HERRING GULL.

In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio an immature Harris's
Sparrow has been seen by many in the visitor center area mostly at the Quail Pond.
JP, NMC, and HS saw it on February 18 with a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW; CB on
February 19.. JP also found seveb AVICETS, SM had a SAGE THRASHER and
another White-throated Sparrow on the Marsh Trail on February 12.

In Sierra County:
BW at the Rock Canyon Marina of Elephant Butte Lake re-found the first
winter GLAUCOUS GULL and had several CALIFORNIA GULLS. MH, CR, and BN saw the
Glaucous with an adult MEW GULL on February 5, MB and NP found both on
February 9. JP reported both on February 11 with a THAYER'S GULL seen at various
times in the morning. JP and HS again had the Glaucous on February 18 all
morning with the Thayer's at 10:30 to 11, but no Mew Gull. There were ten
HERRING GULLS.
JP and WW again saw the RED-NECKED GREBE at a marina on the the lake at
the dam by a restaurant on February 3. Park in the circular parking lot
overlooking the boats.
At Percha Dam State Park JP and WW on February 3 had an EASTERN PHOEBE,
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, and a HUTTON'S VIREO.
py on his February 11-12 field trips reported a FOX SPARROW, EASTERN
BLUEBURDS, the BULLOCK'S ORIOLE, EASTERN PHOEBE, and an empidonax flycatcher.
At Paseo del Rio Park below Elephant Butte dam JP found a WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW on February 11. It was still there for JP and HS on February 28.


In Grant County:
RB saw two TURKEY VULTURES over the Silver City golf course on February
4. A ROSS'S GOOSE, also seen by DZ, has been present through February 12.
RS had a BROWN THRASHER in his Silver City yard near the Gila Medical
Enter on February 1.
JDM banded a female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD at the PT feeder on February 5.

In Hidalgo County:
NMC reminds that County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A
(Gray) Ranch. Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off
the road.

In Luna County:
DB, LM, and others photographed a fenake YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER at
Pancho Villa State Park near Columbus on February 18.
CL saw at the Mountain View Cemetery in Deming on February 12 a HUTTON'S
VIREO and a LONG-EARED OWL.
LM advises that the waste treatment ponds there will be closed for up to
a year for construction.

In Doņa Ana County:
CL on january 29 found a male VARIED THRUSH near Mesilla. It was along
a ditch running parallel to and east of the Rio Grande, about .6 of a mile
north of the Mesilla Dam in willows. It then flew into a privately owned pecan
orchard, but one can walk along the ditch. JN saw it on February 15, WW on
February 14 and JZ and MS on February 16.. CL saw the male columbarius
MERLIN on February 10, JN had the Merlin February 16.. CL had two EASTERN
BLUEBIRDS a mile south of the dam February 11 and JN saw a SWAMP SPARROW up the path
from the thrush site that day. JP and WW on February 3 had a MOORHEN at the
dam.
At the Old Refuge (Mesilla Valley Bosque Park) south of Mesilla DB had a
ZONE-TAILED HAWK on February 11. JN on February 12 had two CAVE SWALLOWS
and a YELLOWTHROAT pair. He saw the swallows again on February 16.
At McDowell Street in Mesilla Park on February 13 JN saw a female
BULLOCK'S ORIOLE.
And JN saw two BURROWING OWLS near the NMSU stock pens on February 13.

In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the "no access"
signs are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding. WW had a
GREAT HORNED OWL and two AVOCETS there on February 13.

In Eddy County:
SW found a WHITE-TAILED KITE near Brantley Lake on February 4 at the
Seven Rivers Waterfowl Management Area next to the stock tank at the north end
of the area adjacent to the pecan trees.
On Brantley Lake SW photographed the GLAUCOUS GULL on February 4, but
did not see any loons.

Field Trips:
Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. On February 23 the hike is to Rinconada Canyon in the Petroglyph NM.

The Cox banding team will be banding rosy finches at Sandia Crest on
February 25 (Saturday). If they are still present the next date is Sunday, March 5.

Central Audubon will bird Turtle Bay Park in Socorro and Bosque del Apache

Sangre de Cristo will to to the Rio Grande Nature Center on Sunday, March

Southwestern Audubon will bird the Gila River Bird Area on Saturday, March

The Randall Davey Audubon Center in Santa Fe has nature walks on the grounds
every Saturday at 8:30 a.m. For details call them at 983-4609.

Percha Dam State Park will have nature walks through March at 2 p.m. on
Saturdays and 10 a.m. on Sundays by Paul Yoder. Contact him at 743-3942. There
will also be walks by appointment and a posted board with notes on birds seen
in the area to Elephant Butte Lake.
