This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Friday, August 19th, 2005.



On August 13th and 14th, a MARBLED GODWIT was reported from Hampton Harbor. Also
present on the 14th were a LEAST TERN and a LAUGHING GULL. On the 15th, a RED KNOT
was seen. On August 16th, a GLAUCOUS GULL was reported from the Yankee Fishermans
Cooperative in Hampton Harbor.



There were various numbers of shorebird sightings reported from the coast last week,
including: BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, RUDDY TURNSTONES, LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, WHIMBRELS, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, SANDERLINGS,
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, LEAST SANDPIPERS, and WILLETS. One of the best places to
look for migrating shorebirds is Hampton Harbor, at low tide.



On August 17th, an observer on a whale watch out of Rye reported 3 PARASITIC
JAEGERS, 120 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 30 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 2 MANX SHEARWATERS, 350
WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, 1 NORTHERN GANNET, and 1 ARCTIC TERN. Another observer, also
on a whale watch on the 17th, reported 2 possible CORY'S SHEARWATERS.



On August 13th, an observer on a fishing boat reported numerous pelagic birds seen
offshore, in or near New Hampshire waters, including 25 MANX SHEARWATERS, 500
GREATER SHEARWATERS, 100 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 100 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, 10 NORTHERN
GANNETS, 4 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, and 1 PARASITIC JAEGER.



On August 15th, 152 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS were seen along the coast in North
Hampton and Rye.



On August 16th, a HORNED GREBE was again seen at the south end of Odiorne State Park
in Rye.



On August 12th, 3 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were seen in Lubberland Creek Marsh on Bay
Road in Newmarket, and on the 14th, 2 were seen near Odiorne Point in Rye.



On August 13th, in Portsmouth, 3 PEREGRINE FALCONS were seen flying over the
Piscataqua River adjacent to the Portsmouth Navy Yard. Also during the past week,
two MERLINS were reported from Pittsburg, and one was seen in Whitefield.



On August 13th, a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was reported from Meadow Pond in
Hampton, and on the 14th, 2 GREEN HERONS were seen along Route 1A in Rye.



A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was reported from Newmarket on August 18th. During the past
week, several migrant warblers were reported, including WILSON'S, CANADA,
CHESTNUT-SIDED, BLUE-WINGED, and YELLOW, as well as NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH and
AMERICAN REDSTART.
