Thayer's Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Glaucous Gull,
Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Black Phoebe, Winter Wren, Gray Catbird, Brown
Thrasher, Long-billed Thrasher, Curve-billed Thrasher, Pine Warbler, Eastern Towhee,
Harris's Sparrow, Golden-crowned Sparrow, Lapland Longspur, Chestnut-collared
Longspur, and rosy-finches.

Adams County:
–BARROW'S GOLDENEYE continue to be seen along the Platte River and on
adjacent gravel ponds just to the west of the river about 0.5 mile south of 88th Ave.
Several were seen on February 12.
--A LONG-TAILED DUCK was reported by Chase near 88th and the Platte on
February 18.
Arapahoe County:
--At Cherry Creek Reservoir Faulkner and Semo saw two LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULLS (3rd-winter, 1st-winter) near the marina on February 4 and a juvenile
THAYER'S GULL in the southeast corner on February 4. On February 5, Walbek
reported a 2nd-cycle THAYER'S GULL near the marina. The THAYER'S GULL and one LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL were seen again on February 10.
Boulder County:
--All three species of ROSY FINCH are being seen again this winter at the
Fawn Brook Inn in Allenspark. All three species were seen on February 21.
--A GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was reported by Deininger at Valmont Reservoir on
February 18.
--Five GREATER SCAUP were observed by the First Sunday Bird Walk led by
Deininger at Cottonwood Marsh on February 5. Four female Scaup were seen on
February 9.
--A TRUMPETER SWAN was reported by Plooster on a pond at Boulder Valley Farm
on February 11. The pond is on the west side of 95th Street between Valmont
Road and Lookout Road. The swan was seen again on February 19.
Delta County:
--18 BARROW'S GOLDENEYE (1 male, 17 female) were reported by Robinsong at
Confluence Park in Delta on February 9. On February 17 there were 3 males.
Denver County:
--A LONG-BILLED THRASHER has been visiting a water feature at 2322 S. Emerson
near Harvard Gulch Park. The bird was reported by Anderson on February 20
and confirmed by Spencer on February 21. The bird was seen again on February
22. The El Paso LONG-BILLED THRASHER was also seen on February 22 so it appears
that Colorado has TWO birds! Please respect private property. Look for the
bird from the street first to avoid flushing it.
Douglas/Jefferson Counties:
--A MEW GULL was reported by Boyce at Chatfield State Park on February 10.
El Paso County:
--A LONG-BILLED THRASHER, initially found by Percival on January 14, was seen
as recently as February 22 on a private ranch. If you want to look for it,
contact Tony Leukering by e-mail (greatgrayowlATaol.com) for details and
directions. This is potentially the 3rd Colorado record for this species. An
EASTERN TOWHEE is present at the same location and was seen again on February 22.
El Paso/Pueblo Counties:
At Chico Basin Ranch, CURVE-BILLED THRASHERS were reported by Maynard in both
El Paso and Pueblo sections of the ranch on February 9. The CURVE-BILLED
THRASHERS were seen again on February 22. Maynard also reported a LADDER-BACKED
WOODPECKER in cholla in the Pueblo section on February 9. In the El Paso
section the BROWN THRASHERS and GRAY CATBIRD that were first reported by Maynard
on February 9 were still present on February 14. The GRAY CATBIRD was seen
again on February 22.
Fremont County:
Two RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROWS were reported by Percival in Canon City on
February 12.
Garfield County:
At Coryell Ranch ponds in Carbondale, twelve BARROW'S GOLDENEYE were reported
by McConnell on February 10.
Gunnison County:
--ROSY-FINCHES (mostly BROWN-CAPPED with some GRAY-CROWNED) are coming to
feeders in the yard of Linda Powers at 324 Whiterock (Corner of 4th) in
Crested Butte. They are still being seen as of February 21. Birders are welcome.
Jefferson County:
--A PINE WARBLER is still being seen in the Denver West Office Park where it
has been present since last November. Lately, it has been reported most
frequently from the area around the south end of Bldg 6. The last report was from
February 19 when the bird was found with Juncos on the north side of ponds
west of Bldg 6.
Larimer County:
--A PINE WARBLER, first report by Hopper on December 17, continues to be seen
almost daily in her yard in Fort Collins with the most recent report from
February 22. To look for the warbler, call Rachel at 970-495-1751.
--A BLACK BRANT continues to be seen in Fort Collins. The most recent report
was on February 14 at the industrial ponds on Prospect. On February 12 it
was at Sheldon Lake in City Park. On February 3 it was seen along the Poudre
Bike Trail near Shields.
--A WINTER WREN was reported by Wild at Dixon Reservoir in Fort Collins on
February 9. It was seen along the northwest side.
Mesa County:
--A GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was reported by Beason about one mile north of O
Road on 19 Road on February 11.
Pueblo County:
--At Lake Pueblo State Park on February 5, Silverman reported one adult
GLAUCOUS GULL at the south marina. On February 12 the following were reported by
Percival at Pueblo Reservoir: one first-year GLAUCOUS GULL, one adult GREAT
BLACK-BACKED GULL, one adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, and one female-type SURF
SCOTER. The BLACK PHOEBE, present since mid-December, was seen at Osprey
Picnic Ground on February 5. Note: Valco Ponds is now part of Lake Pueblo State
Park, and a valid state parks pass is required.
--The following birds were reported by Silverman in the Rye/Colorado City
area: one adult GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE at Lake Beckwith on February 11, 1
adult HARRIS'S SPARROW in Colorado City at the east end of Mustang Ave just west
of the junction of Crow Cut-off and Verde Road on February 10, one
first-winter female CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR and LAPLAND LONGSPUR on Davis Road east
of Apache Road about 0.75 miles east of I-25 on February 11.
Weld County:
LAPLAND LONGSPURS were reported by Warren on Weld County Road 100 west of
Nunn on February 17.
The field trip for Saturday, February 25, is South Platte River Wanderings
led by Ed Holub. Meet the leader at 0730 at the South Platte Park's Carson
Nature Center, north of Mineral Ave, one block west of S. Santa Fe Drive. This
trip may go past lunch so bring lunch and drinking water. Will bird South
Platte Park, McClellan Reservoir, and other places of interest.
The field trip for Sunday, February 26, is Bird Watching for the Novice led
by Karlene Schofield. Meet the leader at 0900 at the Belmar Historic Park, 800
S. Wadsworth Blvd at West Ohio Ave. Turn west on Ohio Ave and go two blocks
straight ahead into Irongate parking lot and to the lake. Trip will end
before noon so lunch is optional.
The next monthly meeting of Denver Field Ornithologists is Wednesday, March
1, at 7:30 PM in Room 301 of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Norm
