For Friday, February 24th, this is the Philadelphia Birdline. The birdline
is sponsored by several bird clubs from the Delaware Valley and comes to you
from the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. I'm Andy Ednie, glad
to be with you.
Waterfowl is on the move. There was a big raft of 30+ NORTHERN PINTAILS at
the Heinz National Environmental Education Center near Tinicum, along with
WOOD DUCK and RUDDY DUCK. Raptors seen at Tinicum include BALD EAGLE, COOPER'S
and SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, and a pair of GREAT HORNED OWLS. Landbirds reported
included EASTERN PHOEBE, WINTER WREN, GRAY CATBIRD, FIELD and FOX SPARROW.
A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH was reported at the
Glen Foerd Estate at the intersection of Grant Ave and State Road in
Northeast Philadelphia.
Lake Nockomixon in Bucks Co. had 4 species of GEESE reported there, GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED, CACKLING BLUE GOOSE, and CANADA. Waterfowl counted included 7
MUTE SWAN, 3 AMERICAN WIGEON, 2 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 4 HOODED MERGANSERS and
800 COMMON MERGANSERS. The count of LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS decreased on
Lake Nockomixon from 225 last week to 124. 3 BALD EAGLES were reported., and
at dusk, a LONG-EARED OWL was seen flying along the shoreline.
6 COMMON GOLDENEYE were seen on Marsh Creek Lake in Chester Co, along with
~50 RING-NECKED DUCK, RUDDY DUCK, COMMON and HOODED MERGANSER, and WOOD
DUCK
2 COMMON SNIPE were seen behind Philadelphia International Airport, along
with SAVANNAH SPARROW and HORNED LARK. 32 LESSER SCAUP and 73 TUNDRA SWANS
were seen on the river in Essington, from Governor Printz Park. A pair of
BALD EAGLE can be seen nesting across the river from the park.
Across the river in Salem Co, BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS continue to be seen in
Salem Co, now in farmyards off Featherbed Lane. LAPLAND LONGSPUR continues
to found among the HORNED LARK at the Delea Sod Farms off US Rt 40.
On Wednesday, there was a big flock of ~50 HORNED LARK with 10 SNOW BUNTING
and 3-4 LAPLAND LONGSPURS in Cumberland Co., at the intersection of Bay
Point Road and Jones Island Rd. below Bridgeton.
Cape May got the first taste of spring with TRICOLORED HERON and TREE
SWALLOW seen at Two Mile Landing.
COMMON EIDER and HARLEQUIN DUCKS continue to be seen at Barnaget Inlet on
Long Beach Island.
The Eurasian form of GREEN-WINGED TEAL, the COMMON TEAL and a EURASIAN
WIGEON were reported this week at Forsythe NWR at Brigantine.
In Delaware, not one, but two EURASIAN WIGEONS were seen this weekend at the
north pond of the Logan Lane Tract. There is a large number of puddle ducks
at the north pond of the Logan Tract, most of which are GADWALL. A hybrid
EURASIAN X AMERICAN WIGEON can also be seen at Cedar Creek Mill Pond off Rt
30 below Milford.
A RAZORBILL was seen at Indian River Inlet, feeding off the south jetty.
Also seen were the previously mentioned drake COMMON EIDER and immature
drake HARLEQUIN DUCK, and gizillions of SURF and BLACK SCOTERS, along with
LONG-TAILED DUCK and PURPLE SANDPIPERS on the jetty. The numbers of NORTHERN
GANNETS offshore has picked up from last month.
2 REDHEADS were seen at Silver Lake in Rehoboth Beach along with usual
CANVASBACK and RUDDY DUCK this weekend. A ROSS' GOOSE was seen at the
Broadkill Beach Impoundments fo the Prime Hook NWR.
11 AMERICAN AVOCETS and GREATER YELLOWLEGS were seen at in the marsh at Big
Stone Beach near Milford.
LAPLAND LONGSPUR and SNOW BUNTINGS continue to be seen along Cartanza Road,
off Rt. 9 north of Little Creek. AMERICAN PIPITS were seen in the field next
the tower at Shearness Pool in Bombay Hook NWR.
In northern Delaware, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen at the entrance to
Brandywine Creek State Park on Tuesday. PURPLE FINCH, BLACK-CAPPED
CHICKADEE, and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER were reported at the nature center
feeders.
4 PINE SISKINS continue to come to Jim White's feeder, at the intersection
of Snuff Mill and Center Mill Roads, near Ashland Nature Center.
