This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for March 2, 2006,
sponsored by the New Mexico Ornithological Society. When phone numbers are given
for private property, please call before going. Highlights are Eurasian
Wigeon, Harris's Sparrow, Glaucous Gull, Varied Thrush, Yellow Grosbeak,
White-tailed Kites.
There have been almost no reports of Cassin's Finches, Red Crossbills,
Evening Grosbeaks, Clark's Nutcrackers, and Pine Grosbeaks. Pinyon Jays are also
hard to find.

In Sandoval County:
DB had an EASTERN PHOEBE in the Corrales bosque at barrel 6.4 along the
ditch on February 26.
In San Miguel County:
On Conchas Lake a RED-THROATED and a PACIFIC LOON were seen by JO, MB and NP
on February 23.
In Colfax County:
DC on Stubblefield Lake found a pair of BARROW'S GOLDENEYE on February 24.
He counted 13 BALD EAGLES there on February 24, two of them were adults.
There have been 15 TUNDRA SWANS on Lake 11 of the nearby Maxwell Refuge off of
hwy. A1. A sole BARB OWL was at the roost on A5.
At the Cimarron Canyon State Park east of Eagle Nest DC found on US 64 On
February 9 one DIPPER at marker 289, SIX at 292, and two more at the Palisade
Sill parking area.
In Cibola County:
On February 17 CJG had a NORTHERN SHRIKE along NM 53 at mile marker 62 (a
mile west of the El Malpais Info Center) on private land in the natl. monument.
He had a CURVE-BILLED THRASHER for the first time on the El Morro Monument
on February 24.
CJG has seen NUTCRACKERS going south on county road 42 off of NM 53 from
the Ice Caves.
In Bernalillo County:
LHo reports that the YELLOW GROSBEAK is now at 1412 Las Lomas NE near the
UNM campus. The street is off of University, one stoplight south of Lomas, and
two stoplights north of Central. Turn west on Las Lomas, it is in the
backyard feeders of a very gracious host, who have been warmly welcomed all to see
it. Many have viewed it through February 28.
RV and NC had a red FOX SPARROW at the front green feeder at the Rio Grande
Nature Center in Albuquerque on February 18. DP on February 25 and March 1
saw it again. One or more WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS have been seen at the
center, by JJ on February 26, and DP on March 1. JJ saw a pair of EASTERN
BLUEBIRDS north of the parking lot on February 25 and on February 26 he saw two
NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS flying over.
DP saw a SWAMP SPARROW on February 25 south of the center along the ditch
south of Campbell St.
BH on February 11 found an adult MEW GULL at a sandbar in the Rio Grande
just north of the Alameda Blvd. bridge in Albuquerque. BH saw it again
February 25, but it was not seen by PM on February 26, or RiC on February 28, but he
did see the immature CALIFORNIA GULL.
JMc and SO saw the male EURASIAN WIGEON at Mariposa Basin Park off Taylor
Ranch Road in Albuquerque on February 19.
At the Crest House feeders on Sandia Crest SNC say flocks of ROSY FINCHES,
mostly BLACKS, are present. The banding team by February 25 have banded a
total so far this winter of 271, including 203 Blacks, 39 BROWN-CAPPED and 29
GRAY-CROWNED. Four of the Hepbun's race have been banded, and there is still an
unbanded one!
In Torrance County:
WW on February 8 on the east side of the Manzano Mts. at Capilla Peak (Trail
170) saw 15 RED CROSSBILLS.
In DeBaca County:
JP and LL on February 17 at Sumner Lake saw three HORNED GREBES and a first
year HERRING GULL.
In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio an immature Harris's Sparrow
has been seen by many in the visitor center area mostly at the Quail Pond. JP,
NMC, and HS saw it on February 18 with a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW; CB on
February 19 had the Harris’s. SM had another White-throated Sparrow on the Marsh
Trail on February 12. KS saw a WHITE PELICAM on February 26.
CL saw a dark mortph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK on the Farm Loop on February 25.
In Sierra County:
BW at the Rock Canyon Marina of Elephant Butte Lake found the first winter
GLAUCOUS GULL. MB and NP found the Glaucous and a MEW GULL on February 9. JP
reported both on February 11 with a THAYER'S GULL. CL saw the Glaucous on
February 26, but did not see the Mew or the Thayer’s Gulls. He did see four
HERRING GULLS.
JN on February 23 again saw the ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER at Riverside Park
below Caballo Dam.
At Percha Dam State Park PY on his February 11-12 field trips reported an
EASTERN PHOEBE. CL had two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS on February 26.
At Paseo del Rio Park below Elephant Butte dam JP and HA again saw the
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW on February 28.
In Grant County:
LM had an OLIVE WARBLER at Cherry Creek Campground north of Pinos Altos on
February 22.
CL saw two WHITE-TAILED KITES two miles west of Hachita on February 18.
In Hidalgo County:
NMC reminds that County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray)
Ranch. Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the
road.
In Luna County:
LM and others photographed a female YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER at Pancho Villa
State Park near Columbus February 18. There was also a WILSON’S SNIPE in
the area.
CL saw at the Mountain View Cemetery in Deming on February 12 a HUTTON'S
VIREO and a LONG-EARED OWL. He saw both again on February 17.
LM advises that the waste treatment ponds there will be closed for up to a
year for construction.
In Dona Ana County:
CL found a male VARIED THRUSH near Mesilla. It was along a ditch running
parallel to and east of the Rio Grande, about .6 of a mile north of the Mesilla
Dam in willows. It then flew into a privately owned pecan orchard, but one
can walk along the ditch. JZ and MS had it on February 16, LS and BR on
February 19.
At the Old Refuge (Mesilla Valley Bosque Park) south of Mesilla DB had a
ZONE-TAILED HAWK on February 11 and saw it again on February 23. The
YELLOWTHROAT male was seen by DB and CL on February 25. He had a WHITE-TAILED KITE
present on February 25. It was seen by JN on February 26, but not the next day.
On the 26th he also had a ROSS’S GOOSE present.
JN saw at Isaak Lake northeast of Las Cruces on February 19 only CASSIN’S
and SAGE SPARROWS.
In Otero County:
BB at Oliver Lee State Park near Alamogordo found two RUFOUS-CROWNED
SPARROWS on February 27.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the "no access" signs
are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding. BB on February 20
saw four SNOWY PLOVERS, four LEAST and a WESTERN SANDPIPER with a PRAIRIE
FALCON. DB saw the two sandpiper species s February 25.
In Lea County:
RC had two BAIRD’S SPARROWS at Maddox Lake west of Hobbs on February 20.
