This is Terry Toppins with the Montana Birding Hotline
sponsored by Birdwatcher's Country Store at the corner
of Main and Pattee in Missoula recorded late Sunday
August 21st, 2005.

Today Sunday August 21st, Denver Holt, Carole and I went to
Pablo NWR north of Pablo and on the mudflats on the north
side of the outlet of the dam we saw 2 BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPERS, 1 juvenile SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER,
at least 85 SEMIPALMATED and 5 BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVERS, 1 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, 46 STILT
SANDPIPERS, and LEAST, SEMIPALMATED, WESTERN,
BAIRD'S and PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, both GREATER
and LESSER YELLOWLEGS along with COMMON LOON
and CASPIAN TERN, several PEREGRINE FALCONS and a
PRAIRIE FALCON.
Gorham Swanberg reported on the 18th that he saw a SNOWY
PLOVER in West Bank Park on the Missouri River close to the
Central Ave. bridge in Great Falls along with CASPIAN and
FORSTER'S TERNS.
Dave Williams went to Benton Lake north of Great Falls on the
19th and saw 6 BLACK TERNS, a FERRUGINOUS HAWK and
a MERLIN. The family of 4 BURROWING OWLS was still present.
On the 17th in Ft. Peck, Chuck Carlson had some nice warblers
at his home: CHESTNUT-SIDED, CANADA, TENNESSEE, ORANGE-
CROWNED and WILSON WARBLERS. He also had 2 young ROSE-
BREASTED and several BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS. On the
18th he had a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER and a COOPER'S
HAWK.
I ran my shorebird survey on the 16th at the Smurfit-Stone Plant west
of Missoula and had record high counts for
BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS-975, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS-189
and STILT SANDPIPERS-21. Tuesday the 17th Carole and I were
lucky enough to see an adult, mostly breeding plumaged HUDSONIAN
GODWIT - but it couldn't be relocated 2 hours later.
August 12th Radd Icenoggle and Sam Koenen were at Cottonwood
Reservoir north of Wilsall and saw about 2500 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS,
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and a lone BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER with
a PEREGRINE FALCON hunting the flock.
August 13th Dan Casey led a group of 13 birders around the Flathead
Valley and saw about 450 shorebirds of 15 species including a
juvenile SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER with 2 LONG-BILLED DOWIT-
CHERS from the Somers Overlook on Highway 93. They also saw
191 SEMIPALMATED, 103 BAIRD'S, 4 SOLITARY and 43 STILT
SANDPIPERS along with 3 WILSON'S and 3 RED-NECKED PHAL-
AROPES.
August 9th, Charles McCarty reported he found a NORTHERN HAWK
OWL in Glacier NP about one half mile south of Dutch Creek on the
Inside Road (which goes north from Fish Creek Camp-ground). The bird
was on the west side of the road about 200 yards in.
