Adams County:
–BARROW'S GOLDENEYES continue to be seen along the Platte River and on
adjacent gravel ponds just to the west of the river about 0.5 mile south of 88th
Ave. Several were seen on February 25 on the river and on West Gravel Ponds.
--A LONG-TAILED DUCK was reported by Chase near 88th and the Platte on
February 18. On February 23 two LONG-TAILED DUCKS were reported on the gravel ponds.
--A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was reported by Walbek and Kilpatrick on a pond south
of 88th and east of the Platte on February 25.
Arapahoe County:
--The HARRIS'S SPARROW was still present at the Carson Nature Center in South
Platte Park through March 2. Look around the feeders. It likes to come in
for a meal between 10 a.m. and noon.
Baca County:
--At Two Buttes SWA Pieplow reported one eastern race WINTER WREN near the
northeast corner along the stream, two CURVE-BILLED THRASHERS, and one male
LADDER-BACKED WOODPECKER on February 25. Moss reported a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER
on February 25.
Boulder County:
--All three species of ROSY-FINCHES are being seen again this winter at the
Fawn Brook Inn in Allenspark. All three species were seen on February 21.
–GREATER SCAUP were observed by the First Sunday Bird Walk led by Deininger
at Cottonwood Marsh on February 5. GREATER SCAUP were seen again at Cottonwood
Marsh on March 1.
--At Erie Lake, Schmoker reported a young GLAUCOUS GULL, an adult LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL in alternate plumage, and a first-winter MEW GULL on February
27. Erie Lake is on the east side of 287 north of Arapahoe.
--At Thomas Reservoir, Semo reported a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE and a
4th-cycle THAYER'S GULL. Thomas Reservoir is on the east side of 119th St between
Arapahoe and Isabelle Roads.
Denver County:
--A LONG-BILLED THRASHER has been visiting a yard at 2332 S. Emerson near
Harvard Gulch Park. The bird was reported by Anderson on February 20 and
confirmed by Spencer on February 21. The bird was seen again on March 3. The bird
is often seen near the back fence. Please respect private property. Look for
the bird from the street first to avoid flushing it.
--A GREATER SCAUP was reported by Jones at Fort Logan Cemetery on February 28.
Douglas/Jefferson Counties:
--A MEW GULL was reported by Boyce at Chatfield State Park on February 10.
The gull was seen again on February 20.
El Paso County:
--A LONG-BILLED THRASHER, initially found by Percival on January 14, was seen
as recently as February 28 on a private ranch. If you want to look for it,
contact Tony Leukering by e-mail (greatgrayowlATaol.com) for details and
directions. This is potentially the 3rd Colorado record for this species. An
EASTERN TOWHEE is present at the same location and was seen again on February 28.
El Paso/Pueblo Counties:
At Chico Basin Ranch, CURVE-BILLED THRASHERS were reported by Maynard in both
El Paso and Pueblo sections of the ranch on February 9. CURVE-BILLED
THRASHERS were seen again on February 28. In the El Paso section the BROWN THRASHERS
and GRAY CATBIRD that were first reported by Maynard on February 9 were still
present on February 28. A GREATER SCAUP was reported by Maynard on February 26
in the northern Pueblo section.
Fremont County:
--Two RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROWS were reported by Percival in Canon City on
February 12. One was seen on February 26.
--A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was reported by Percival in Canon City on
February 26.
Gunnison County:
--ROSY-FINCHES (mostly BROWN-CAPPED with some GRAY-CROWNED) are coming to
feeders in the yard of Linda Powers at 324 Whiterock (Corner of 4th) in
Crested Butte. They are still being seen as of February 21. Birders are welcome.
Jefferson County:
--A PINE WARBLER is still being seen in the Denver West Office Park where it
has been present since last November. Lately, it has been reported most
frequently from the area around the south end of Bldg 6. The last report was from
February 19 when the bird was found with juncos on the north side of ponds
west of Bldg 6.
Kiowa County:
--At Neegronda Reservoir, Pieplow reported one adult GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL
on February 25.
--A GREATER ROADRUNNER was reported by Stevens on SR 96 west of Eads at mile
post 92 on February 26.
Larimer County:
--A PINE WARBLER, first reported by Hopper on December 17, continues to be
seen almost daily in her yard in Fort Collins with the most recent report from
February 28. To look for the warbler, call Rachel at 970-495-1751.
--A BLACK BRANT continues to be seen in Fort Collins. The most recent report
was on February 26 at Riverbend Ponds Natural Area along Prospect. It was
seen at the Industrial ponds on Prospect on February 14 and at Sheldon Lake in
City Park on February 12.
--Four adult TRUMPETER SWANS continued to be seen in southwest Loveland at
least through February 26. They were seen at Cattail Pond on February 25. A
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was also reported at Cattail Pond by Coley on February 26.
--A second-year MEW GULL was found by Wild and reported by Komar at Fossil
Creek Reservoir on February 26.
--GREATER SCAUP were reported by DeFonso at Fossil Creek Reservoir on
February 28.
Prowers County:
--At the Lamar Community College grove on February 25 Pieplow reported a
CAROLINA WREN and Moss reported two male RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS.
Pueblo County:
--The following birds were reported by Percival at Pueblo Reservoir: one
first-year GLAUCOUS GULL, two adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, two BARROW'S
GOLDENEYES (one male, one female) on February 25 and a female LONG-TAILED DUCK on
February 24. On February 26 Percival reported the following at Pueblo Reservoir:
one adult MEW GULL, five LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS (4 adults, 1 third-year),
1 first-year GLAUCOUS GULL, two BARROW'S GOLDENEYE (one male, one female),
one hybrid GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, and one hybrid HOODED MERGANSER x GOLDENEYE.
--A CURVE-BILLED THRASHER was reported by Fink at the headquarters building
of Pueblo Reservoir on February 26.
–Three MEW GULLS (2 adult, 1 first-year) were reported by Percival at the
North Shore Marina of Pueblo Reservoir on March 2.
Weld County:
--A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was reported by Lefko at Woods Lake on
February 25.
–At Union Reservoir in Longmont, a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was reported
by Prather on March 2.
