A male MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD was seen in a yard in Red Deer on February 21. The bird
was seen by Dorothy Dickson who subsequently reported it. This is a possible record
early Spring arrival date for this species in Alberta. The long temperate winter
this year produced other possible record early arrivals, including an AMERICAN ROBIN
on January 27 near Chestermere Lake reported by Marie Gjerdal, followed by a flock
of 4 ROBINS reported by Chris Smith in a yard in the Doverglen area of Calgary on
February 4. Another possible Spring arrival was an AMERICAN ROBIN seen by Terry
Korolyk in the Town of Nanton on February 10. HORNED LARKS were back in Alberta
around Rosebud and Stavely by the 3rd week in January, while a possible Spring
arrival KILLDEER was reported February 14 by Andrew Slater north of Hwy 22X Bridge
in east Fish Creek PP in Calgary. Observers are reminded that Gulls should be
showing up in our area within the next couple of weeks.

Owls reported recently include a NORTHERN HAWK OWL and a NORTHERN PYGMY OWL from the
south loop of the Jumping Pound Demonstration Forest south loop road off Hwy 68
reported Monday, February 27 by Rob Worona. At night, Rob reported 2 BARRED OWLS.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, March 6.
