This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for March 9, 2006,
sponsored by the New Mexico Ornithological Society. When phone numbers are given
for private property, please call before going. Highlights are Harris's
Sparrow, Yellow Grosbeak, White-tailed Kites.
Some migrants seem to be returning early. There have been very few reports
of Cassin's Finches, Red Crossbills, Evening Grosbeaks, Clark's Nutcrackers,
and Pine Grosbeaks.

In Sandoval County:
DBr had an EASTERN PHOEBE in the Corrales bosque at barrel 6.4 along the
ditch on February 26.
In San Miguel County:
Hard to believe, but someone ripped out and stole the telescope on the Crane
Lake Overlook deck at the Las Vegas Refuge.
In Colfax County:
DC on Stubblefield Lake found a pair of BARROW'S GOLDENEYE on February 24
and a male on March 2.
At the Cimarron Canyon State Park east of Eagle Nest DC found on US 64 on
March 1 a WINTER WREN at mile marker 289 above the beaver dams.
In Cibola County:
BF and PS found up to 30 PINYON JAYS in Bluewater Canyon on March 3. There
were scattered WHITE PELICANS on Bluewater Lake. BN and CR on March 5
counted 49 pelicans and eight AVOCETS. They saw many of the jays in the western
Zuni Mts. From the El Malpais NM to Bluewater Canyon. There was a HORNED
GREBE on Acomita Lake.
CJG had a CURVE-BILLED THRASHER for the first time on the El Morro Monument
on February 24.
In Bernalillo County:
The YELLOW GROSBEAK is at 1412 Las Lomas NE in Albuquerque near the UNM
campus. The street is off of University, one stoplight south of Lomas, and two
stoplights north of Central. (There are two Lomas Streets). Turn west on Las
Lomas, it is in the backyard feeders of a very gracious hosts. Many have
viewed it through March 8 by SMc.
DP had a red FOX SPARROW at the front green feeder at the Rio Grande Nature
Center in Albuquerque on February 25 and March 1. One or more WHITE-THROATED
SPARROWS have been seen at the center, by JJ on February 26, and DP on March
1. JJ saw a pair of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS north of the parking lot February 25.
JMc and SO saw the male EURASIAN WIGEON at Mariposa Basin Park off Taylor
Ranch Road in Albuquerque on February 19.
At the Crest House feeders on Sandia Crest SNC say flocks of ROSY FINCHES,
mostly BLACKS, are present. The banding team by March 5 have banded a total
this winter of 290, including 215 Blacks, 43 BROWN-CAPPED and 32 GRAY-CROWNED.
Five of the Hepbun's race have been banded.
In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio an immature Harris's Sparrow
has been seen by many in the visitor center area mostly at the Quail Pond. CB
saw it on February 19. CL saw a dark morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK on the Farm
Loop on February 25. DB on March 4 saw this hawk and a MERLIN.
JO at his home near Luis Lopez south of Socorro on March 1 had a HARRIS’S
and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS.
In Catron County:
JH at her ranch east of Datil on March 3 saw a CEDAR WAXWING. Two RED
CROSSBILLS appeared also.
In Sierra County:
CL saw the first winter GLAUCOUS GULL at the Rock Canyon Marina of Elephant
Butte Lake on February 26.
At Percha Dam State Park CL had two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS on February 26.
At Paseo del Rio Park below Elephant Butte dam JP and HS again saw the
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW on February 28.
In Grant County:
PT on March 5 had a female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD in her Silver City yard and
reported that JDM had another at Roberts Lake.
LM had an OLIVE WARBLER at Cherry Creek Campground north of Pinos Altos on
February 22.
CL saw two WHITE-TAILED KITES two miles west of Hachita on February 18. On
March 3 he saw three south of Hachita between mile markers 35 and 36.
In Hidalgo County:
NMC reminds that County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray)
Ranch. Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the
road.
In Luna County:
LM and others photographed a female YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER at Pancho Villa
State Park near Columbus February 18.
LM advises that the waste treatment ponds there will be closed for up to a
year for construction.
In Dona Ana County:
DG had the COMMON GROUND-DOVE at his Las Cruces home on March 8.
JZ and MS on March 4 had an adult HARLAN’S HAWK at a pecan orchard just west
of the NM 28 intersection with Snow Road. CL saw it on March 7 along the
Rio two miles south of the Mesilla Dam.
CL had a CASSIN’S VIREO in Mesilla Park on March 8,
In Soledad Canyon in the Organ Mts. On March 3 JN saw two SCRUB JAYS and two
JUNIPER TITMICE with a HUTTON’S VIREO.
At the Old Refuge (Mesilla Valley Bosque Park) south of Mesilla the
YELLOWTHROAT male was seen by DB and CL on February 25. DB had a WHITE-TAILED KITE
present on February 25. It was seen by JN on February 26. JO did not find
the kite on February 28.
In Otero County:
BB on March 6 had a BELL’S VIREO near Dog Canyon south of Alamogordo.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the "no access" signs
are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding. BB on February 20
saw four SNOWY PLOVERS, four LEAST and a WESTERN SANDPIPER. DB saw the two
sandpiper species on February 25.
In Eddy County:
SW and LS on March 5 had 35 TURKEY VULTURES over Carlsbad. He reported a
dead nake BULLOCK’S ORIOLE there on March 6.
